submarines should have the effect of privateers

i don't think it should be disel subs since they had to surface to much. Now the nuke and fuel cell subs we have now travel fro months with out surfacing and don't surface any where but friendly ports. I mean all you got to go by is a blip on the screen. the only reason we new they were russian in the days of the cold war was everyone else was telling us were their subs where so if it was not one of them it must have been the enemy.

An odd little bit of info, Disel subs, while they have to surface to recharge their batteries are actually quieter submarged than Nukes. While on Batteries, and a at dead stop, an old disel boat is almost undetectable, they make no noise at all, A nuke still has to have their reactors on line which make minimal noise.

Also, the US navy can tell whose sub is whose by the sounds that the subs make via their properllers, each has a distinctive 'footprint'. It has nothing to do with other nations tell another navy where it's boats were, although that may happen between strong allies, it is unheard off. US boats are given a patrol area which can consist of a LOT of ocean and the Submarine command will have no clue where the boat is in that area so they can not tell any allies.
