Sudden Technology Rush

Hi. I was playing Civ 3 today on a remote island. It's a Massive-Size map, I generated it in map editor, 362x362, so despite the 23 other civs I had only met the Germans on an island near enough for my Galleys to cross.

I was busy learning Mathematics when suddenly I started getting messages from my scientific adviser, saying I'ed learnt the secrets of maths from the Romans and Russians. Then I automatically started learning other techs, horseback riding, republic, the wheel etc, and I ended up learning everything up to Theology. At the time I was technologically backwards compared to the Germans, but I sprang forward to there league when this happened.

I'm not complaining, but it was extremely odd. I'm on PTW btw. Anybody know what happened?

I had previously Built it earlier in the game, and gained a single technology, masonry.

But this was a massive rush of technology, as I said, Republic, Horseback Riding, the Wheel, Currency, Construction, Monoethism, etc.

Note that the free techs will end as soon as you learn Education. How many civs are in the game? Even with all 31 you can take some time to met others.

Did you change the cost factor for techs? I would suggest about 800 for that map. I use 650 for 250x250 and 800 for 262x362. You may not know it, but the culture will reset to 100k, too low for even a large map.

Looks like the Germans sold contact with you to some other civs.

That would make sense to me. I wondered why I suddenly started getting messages from civs I'ed never met before XD thanks.

Combined with the Great Library, all this makes more sense to me.
