Suggestion - Empire Splitting

I'm certain this idea has been floated before, but it's worth repeating. I'd like to see the splitting of civilizations in the event a capital falls or an empire falls into revolt. If I remember correctly, this was a feature in CivI or CivII.

Some of my most memorable games occured after my empire split and I had to fight a vicious war of re-unification.

To me it seems more realistic that an empire splits into factions after a capital falls. In the current design, the capital simply moves. It's actually a better strategy to surround the capital - cutting off its trade ability - than take the capital outright. This needs to be rectified in my opinion.

first of welcome to CivFanatics, second i really think that this needs to be implemented, but there are so many obstacles now with civ 3 like what would the country be called, personally i think it should be named after the largest city that split, second a leader i really dont know how this could be resolved.

Thank you for the welcome. I've lurked on these boards (along with Apolyton) for over a year. This is my first post though!

If I remember correctly, the naming of the empire was resolved in CivII by substituting in an unused civ. It has it draw backs, but it can make some sense.

For example: The Roman empire could split to create the French. Another split could create the Germans.

The game has civ's linked by neighbors - a neighbor could be the first choice the game looks at to substibute after a split. I agree it would seem weird that the English could split into the Japanese.

But also what about adding secondary civs? The Irish, the Castillians, Kurds, the Tajiks, the Oaxicans, the Pawnee, etc.

The leader question could be resolved by creating four or five "generic" secondary leader faces. The names could be substituted in depending upon the splitting nation.

For example: The English capital falls to the French. The English split into the Irish and the English. The Irish leader's head is drawn from the generic 'Euro' template. The name is pulled from an Irish name database.

Then the French take the Irish capital. By chance those cities also happen to split again.

The chance of splitting should be based upon a calculation of how large the civ is, how happy the people are, what the culture of the civ is, and how many people are being assimilated in the cities. I think cities that have greater mixes of diversity would have a greater chance of joining the new empire.

Thoughts?

yeah i thought about the idea of "generic" leaderheads, but how much room would it take up, and what if that supply is exhausted, would you see an Asian man in control of the Pawnees.

Edit: no sarcasm meant in this post, i read it and i thought i was being sarcastic;)

Another generic "leaderhead" idea: Make these "leaderheads" wear masks. This could obscure the faces details, and give them a more "rebel" feel. The mask color could match the new AI player color.

Thank you for the threads above.
