Suggestion for those with installation problems - DirectX version

Just thought I'd share this little bit with my fellow players. From all my toils and messing around with the install, I've found that the game seems to be very very sensitive to the version of DirectX installed on your system. I set up a virtual PC install of Windows 98 to play the games on, and thought I was being clever in immediately applying all the latest security patches, updates, DirectX versions, etc. Game fell flat on its face. But with a plain, un-updated version of Windows 98, although I got some of the common installation errors, the work-arounds posted elsewhere here on these boards allowed me to play.

Moral of the story...older DirectX versions work much better with SMAC.
