I didn't, no real bonuses towards religion and the war cart makes me want to invest in military conquest early on.

How do you defend against religious defeat?

I just lost a game on deity due to Scythian religious victory. It came unexpected. I paid no attention to religion didn't get one and thought that AIs would keep a sort of stalemate on the religious front so I don't need to worry about religion.

So how do you defend in general if you don't manage to get a religion?

@Sir Og Declaring war so you can kill their apostles. You can also discuss with the AI to not convert your cities first and see if they listen. But yes, you have to pay attention to religious spread.
