In a game of Civ III there's always a little sun in the bottom right box. Can anyone tell me if itcdoes or represents anything?

It represents pollution. More pollution makes the sun larger. As it gets larger there is more of a chance pollution will cause global warming. You can slow the process down by cleaning up any pollution as it happens in your territory and by using mass transit and recycling center, and also replacing coal power with hydro, nuclear or solar power plants. Unfortunately, the AI does little to clean or prevent pollution, so there is still a chance global warming will happen no matter how clean your own empire is.

Pollution on the tiles does not have an impact on Global Warming. It is affected only by pollution from towns. Things like high population in Metros, Factory and other pollution eminating structures.

Pollution on tiles only affects the tiles ability to be used. It cannot be worked, if it is polluted.

I've been under the wrong impression tile pollution was a factor. Thanks for the correction. I do remember reading a thread where someone said they nuked a lot of tiles and experienced global warming immediately after. Is nuke contamination on tiles treated differently by the game with regard to global warming?
