Hello all. I'm at work (go figure) and I have a burning question in my head that I could answer for myself if I had a running version of the game in front of me, which I don't.

OK, is is possible for a unit that starts as a swordsman to eventually become a mech. infantry?

Through some sort of Swordsman becomes muskteer becomes rifleman becomes.... string of advencement?

thanks a bunch.

I'm not sure whether a swordsman can, as I can't remember they're upgrade path, but an archer certainly can. You could upgrade it all in one step if you wanted, but generally I try and keep my units up to date.

you can upgrade automatically through different levels ei. from archere to mech inf. without having to upgrade to each supsequent unit seperately. It just cost more to do it.

Actually I think it costs less to upgrade directly. Spearman to Pikeman 100 gp, Pikeman to Rifleman 175gp = 275gp, OR spearman directly to rifleman 250 gp.

Upgrade cost = (3 * difference in building cost) + 25. To avoid paying the 25 gold for each subsequent upgrade, you can upgrade from archer to mech infantry in one go. But you'll have a very weak defense as long as you don't upgrade. It's a tough choise.

I have noticed that it's cheaper to rush production than to upgrade. Of course it's worth it if your units have alot of xp. But if you have all of the possible +XP civics/buildings, it's harder to find a unit that's worth upgrading.

****** Not the point of the original question.

I know you can skip steps.

My question is can a unit that is born a Swordsman someday either directly, or through a series of upgrades, grow up to become a Mech Infantry?

I'm only interested in Swordsman to Mech Infantry specifically.

I don't mean to be a Troll, but the point of the OP was lost.

heck the most funny one is cavelry upgrades to helicopter
go figure that

This makes perfect sense actually. During Vietnam, and since, helicopters have been referred to as 'Airborne Cavalry', because of their mobility and speed.

Actually, I think helicopters made thier first military role appearance in the Korean War (think M.A.S.H.). And horses made thier last appearance with the Russians in WWII (in a large capacity).

Horsemen to helicopters actually makes perfect sense. And you're correct, in todays American military attack helicopter units are still called cavalry.

No it isn't. Don't upgrade until you've pissed off someone near the point where a war out of pride is the only option (I've had civs march across the whole world to try to kick my arse just for not paying them tribute.)

Pyrion, two points you should consider are,

Maybe the AI would be less inclined to march across the whole world to kick your arse for not paying tribute if you had bothered to upgrade your units. They may even consider you such a stronger player that they do not even demand the tribute.

If you leave it until the last minute you may not have enough money to do the job properly.

Yes. Swordsman > Maceman > Rifleman > Infantry > Mech Infantry

Thank you, sir.

I mainly wanted to know due to the mod I'm working on. I didn't want to throw off the balance of the game.

Technically, today's US Cavalry is troops that are dropped into action by helicopters. A fairly accurate depiction of how they stopped being called "part of the infantry" and became the "air cavalry" can be seen in the Mel Gibson film, We Were Soldiers.

The horse cavalry, a staple of all armies for centuries, was made obsolete over night by the invention of the machine gun. So the US Army had no Cavalry from about 191? until 196?.

There was a pretty good movie a number of years ago, the name of which I can't remember that Robert Redford was in that depicts when the Brass of the US Army decided that since the Horse Cavalry was obsolete, the horses should be "Done away with." Redford played a Cavalry Colonel who said "a cavalryman's first duty is to his horse." He and a group of others, against orders, herded the condemned horses into Canada and turned them loose. Their descendants are today the wild mustangs of Alberta and Montana.

Actually, I've mostly heard armor divisions (tanks) referred to as armored cavelry.

Some infantry are called arborne cav also...

I think that any unit that fills the same roll of mobility and power can be called cavelry. Didn't horses upgrade to tanks in Civ II/III?

I don't think so.

As far as I remember Cavalry did not upgrade to anything in Civ III
