This thread is brought to you by the T&T department

We are 6 turns away from researching Republic. It doesn't matter if we revolt immediately or later, we do have to pick a new tech to research.

Options:
Construction. This is the last needed tech in the Ancient Age. We need it to get into the Middle Ages. But it is also trade-able. India, Russia and therefore also Germany have this knowledge.

India wants for it:
Polytheism + Contact with Greece. (They'll throw in some gold as well)
Polytheism + Contact with Egypt. (They'll throw in some gold as well)
Polytheism + 66 gold.
Polytheism + 4gpt.
Polytheism + WM. (They'll throw in some gold as well)
WM + contact with Egypt. (They'll throw in some gold as well)
WM + contact with Greece + 16 gold.
WM + contact with Greece + 1 gpt.
24 gpt.

Germany wants for it:
Polytheism. (They'll throw in some gold as well)
26 gpt.
346 gold + 7 gpt.
Contact with Greece + 12 gpt.
Contact with Greece + 205 gold.
Contact with Egypt + 9 gpt.
Contact with Egypt + 145 gold.
WM + 21 gpt.
Contact with Greece + WM + 7gpt.
Contact with Greece + WM + 109 gold.
Contact with Egypt + WM + 3gpt.
Contact with Egypt + WM + 49gold.

Russia wants for it:
Polytheism + Contact with Greece + 3gpt.
Polytheism + Contact with Greece + 50 gold.
Polytheism + Contact with Egypt. (They'll throw in some gold as well)
Polytheism + Contact with both Greece and Egypt. (They'll throw in some gold as well)
Polytheism + WM + 12 gpt.
Polytheism + 18 gpt.
Polytheism + 310 gold.
WM + Contact with Greece + 6 gpt.
WM + Contact with Greece + 95 gold.
WM + Contact with Egypt + 2 gpt.
WM + Contact with Egypt + 35 gold.
WM + Contact with both Greece and Egypt. (They'll throw in some gold as well)
346 gold + 6gpt.
26gpt.

Monarchy. A Government tech. It allows the building of the Hanging Gardens and a revolution to that Government. No-one we've met has that tech.

What to research next ?

I'll also make a Construction-trade thread

I would like to see a bee-line to education so we can render Germany's Great Library obsolete. I'll come back with details and a possible plan in a bit.

EDIT:

I am beginning to formulate a plan based on our current technology status, and Germany and Russia's attributes being Scientific.

In this plan we trade both Russia and Germany Polytheism, and get Construction from them. Giving them Poly will push them into the Middl Ages the next turn, and awarding them a free tech. They each have a 33.3% (approx) of getting Monotheism for free. We then have to bargain for Mono, and then start on Theology. From Theology we get Education, and then trade it to Germany, which will stop the benefits of the Great Library.

Also a by product is that we prebuild for the Sistine Chapel, and once we get Theology we start the SC.

I just made this quick and at a glance. Of course it has many risks involved, and looking back the risks might out-weigh the rewards if something goes wrong. Also we should trade Polytheism to everyone who doesn't have it for some cash, because Russia and Germany are bound to if we don't.

but, war with egypt looks very possible. so we would want feudalism then the path towards gunpowder

Status:
Russia currently makes the lowest offer for polytheism: 130g. I conclude that they will discover it in about 3-4 turns, i.e. BEFORE we learn republic.

A lot depends on Greece and Egypt not making contact. Then we have the communications as valuable trading goods.

IMHO we are at the second key trading point with the dawn of the Middle Ages (first was map making which we didn't use to our advantage). A lot depends on the free techs of the scientific civs Greece, Babylon, Germany, and Russia.

They all might get monotheism, but it is also possible that they get 2 or even all three: monotheism, feudalism, engineering.

Goal:
The optimum scenario (a.k.a. wishful thinking) is:
  1. The scientific AIs learn 2 or 3 Middle Age techs.
  2. We can trade for all of them.
  3. We don't even have to give them republic but leave them in despotism
  4. We start researching as tech leader.
How to do it:
    1. Prevent contacts with Greece and Egypt. Our galleys may delay progress of Greek or Egyptian ships for the crucial 1 or 2 turns
    2. monitor Russia's research of polytheism; the turn before they learn it, trade for construction
    3. see that all scientific civs enter Middle Ages the same turn; this way we see their techs and might broker using the contacts
    4. research either theology of invention full speed
Only trade away republic if absolutely necessay to get monotheism, feudalism, or engineering; otherwise it is better to keep the AIs in despotism, since that will make up for our delayed development caused by the anarchy period.

PS: I'm also in favor of going gunpowder, because our cities are a long way from building cathedrals and universities. And Germany's Great Library is also an asset for us: it reduces technology prices, if we want to buy them.
