T3 External Consulate - Annex Portugal?

Our army has reduced Madrid to one weakened (1/3) Pikeman. We still have units with movement left this turn that could complete our capture of Madrid. These include Cavalry in Gingerbread City that could reach Madrid and take it; except that their path is blocked by a Portuguese Sword.

Our peace treaty with Portugal has just expired. It’s likely that next turn they may ask us to renew it. If they do, we have two choices: renew the treaty for 20 turns; or renew our war with them. Portugal owns the Great Pyramids, which we covet. We will soon be annexing all of their territory; war with them is inevitable. Thus the question is shall we declare war on Portugal now, which would also enable us to take Madrid without risk it may be reinforced; or shall we risk having to make a treaty that will not permit us to go to war with Portugal for another 20 turns. Portugal originally declared war on us, so we will gain War Happiness in our next war with them.

The External Consulate recommends that we declare war on Portugal at the beginning of Tuesday’s turnchat (the last in Term 3) and annex Portugal’s remaining four cities. This would also enable us to capture the Portuguese Sword blocking our Calvary’s path, and would enable us to take Madrid.

Thoughts?

I agree, sadly we must fight once again for the freedom of our great nation, hopefully soon the war phase will be over and we can get down to peacefull cultural buliding

Is it time yet for the Chansellor to relenquish his emergency powers back to the senate. Whops, wrong place :p. But it does set the mood that we should go into a state of peace.

Lets end this truce on our terms. We should end the current treaty with Portugal and finish the brutal war that Portugal began.

If I am not mistaken, Madrid is a Spanish city...are you sure you talking about Portugal or Spanish?

Madrid is a Spanish city, but there is a Portugese unit blocking a road in our territory that would allow us to strike the final blow and capture Madrid.

The question regarding Portugal must still be answered as the peace/MA deal has run 20 turns and Portugal will ask to renegotiate it soon. If we don't want to be locked into 20 turns of peace then we must have a plan.

Here's the situation.

There's 1 unit left in Madrid - we've killed all the others. We have no units that can currently reach, but some that could if the Portuguese Sword wasn't there. As we have just capture Tours we can't demand the Portuguese leave, but as our alliances have expired we could declare war, kill the Sword then capture Madrid.

That's a nice summary of the situation. We know we're going to be at war with Portugal again sooner or later (remember: they declared on us first so they're virtually guaranteed to renew warfare), and our treaty has expired. We wouldn't renew it next turn anyway should they come asking us to do so; so we might as well go ahead, declare on them now when we're legally and morally able to do so, and clear their sword out of the way so we can finish our business in Madrid.
