I tried playing on a higher level last night (warlord - gulp!!) and basically got my butt handed to me in a tank battle. Yeah yeah I know I'm playing low level, but so what I still enjoy playing. Anyway, I'm not sure if this is how they act or if it was a graphical glitch, something akin to a timing issue, but I had a tank fire upon a unit from 5 squares away. Honestly the combat was pretty confused, with multiple units attacking and the declaration of war occurring AFTER the attack (which I didn't think they could do). So it wasn't clear if the tank that fired was drawn hitting my unit prior to actually moving or if it was doing some sort of fire support role that I didn't know existed. The only thing that would make me think it was doing some sort of fire support is because it ended up nowhere near the unit it attacked.

And BTW: Is there a penalty for creating soldiers and stationing them outside the city?

That thing with the faraway tanks is an issue with the rendering rather than the actual gameplay - units are regularly drawn in odd locations in combat animations. Tanks against tanks isn't entirely wise - you need a variety of units, in this case primarily a few gunships. Gunships own tanks with their 100% bonus and huge speed advantage (outside railroaded territory, at least) - getting some bombers and even fighters will also help, especially if you get in the air ahead of the enemy.

As for your BTW, yes - support costs depend on unit location, increasing in particular for units outside friendly territory.

the ranged tank attack is just a graphical glitch... I have seen it several times. The declaration of war comming after the attack sounds strange but if your going by the messages that appere in the upper left of the screen those are usually delayed (i can usualy end my turn before it finishes showing everything).

The tank battle involving the tank firing from a great distance is a known graphics glitch. It doesn't effect combat in any way.

You can have a few units outside of your cultural border, but when you exceed that limit, it starts costing you 1 gold per unit for supply costs.

Alright, I thought it was a glitch or something, it looked that way, but I was just asking.

So if I keep my troops in my civilization's limits the cost stays the same. Sounds good, since the AI loves to go after certain areas when it attacks and putting troops on those items would force them to attack me prior to gaining the land.

Declaration of war occuring after the fight? Nope.

whenever was is declared you hear the same sound (declare war on somebody you'll know what sound I'm talking about).

So the sequence is:

*sound* (top-left message log says: X has declared war on you!)
*battles*
*diplomacy happens, where you actually see the diplomacy screen with the declaration of war*

Basically the diplomacy screen happens after the fighting, but the actual declaration of war precedes it.

Panzers rock! Build panzers or helis to take out tanks.
