Tech race is boring compared to Civ 2. Mod?

This has probably been discussed here before, but my search did not bring up anything relevant. Sorry if I'm repeating; feel free to point me to a previous thread.

I'm playing Civ 3: Conquests after a long pause of not playing Civ. Starting up again has reminded me of a big problem I had - compared to Civ and Civ 2, the tech race feels boring.

First, there do not seem to be independent technology paths that create "either-or" decision making.. Everyone seems to be researching the same techs at the same time; the AI trading and the lack of true "branches" means that it seems rare for me to get knights while someone else is going after trebuchets. There is no feeling of "now I got that unit I want, lets see if it changes things," because either everyone else has it within a turn or two, or I am so far ahead that it didn't really matter if I got the unit.

Likewise, for building, it does not feel like there is much choice. Typically, I've built everything. There is no feeling of "marketplace or library" like there was in the old game. Instead, it feels like you put out buildings faster than you get new options for building through technology.

In general, the tech tree feels pretty pointless; everyone is muddled together in the middle, and differentiation does not come from choosing different paths, but instead from pulling ahead in the race in general.

Are there any patches or mods that have resolved this?

Allow me to add an additional frustration caused by the crappy tech and tech trading system - wonder races. It used to be before that people would build different wonders based on the techs they have. Now, every nation is jammed up in the middle with the same techs, and everyone throws up the same wonders as soon as a tech is discovered. Then it becomes a painful series of, "X is now building the, Y is now building the, Z is now building the" wonder reports everytime a new wonder is built.

I think it was the addition of eras. Everyone has to fill out their 'era card' before moving on. This enforces a certain same progression with usually only 2 major paths for how you complete an era. I think a step back to the Cvi1 and 2 open tech tree would be better.

I agree with you, Slyfrog. The tech race is now just a race. However I still think the Unique Units and the traits allow for pretty diversified strategies. And depending on wether I'm religious or scientific, I'll usually go for temples or libraries.
But then I'll build everything :D

try using a mod Slyfrog. some mods can be very fun. i suggest Double Your Pleasure (DYP) mod. that adds tons of new units and lots of techs. in that one actually their is different paths you can take to victory but the mod is hard. also you may want to try out Master of Myrror or Warhammer Mod if you like fantasy but both are still awesome mods if you don't like fantasy.

I agree with Masquerouge on the units part. It is what keeps the civs very seperate. Getting your unit does deffinately change the game. And it is also what changes what you go for. For example I really like Ottoman cause of the Sipahi. Very powerful cavalry. While most are taking the other path and getting navigation or Democracy or amybe balancing it all together, I am soley going going for Military Tradition.. Cause I know once I got that Sipahi I am gonna stomp some neighbors.. And reach a golden age cause I will certainly start atleast one war.
I see variation but I guess it could use more :D
