Tech Settings?

I notice that when I play Monarch level (just starting Emporer) that my tech goes way too fast, I end up with Modern Armor and Mech Infantry by 1850. I play huge maps with 16 civs.

I'm watching another guy play here and he's on a small map with 4 civs and it's 2016 and he's still only got infantry.

So I'm wondering if any of you out there know of the best settings on each size map for the tech rate. I'd imagine the number of civs matters too, because with more civs the trade possibilities grow exponentially and that really helps to speed along the climbing of the tree.

It'd be cool if there were a formula that could take into account map size and # of civs for a realistic timeline on the tech race . . .

EDIT/NOTE: Just in case it wasn't clear, when I say settings for tech, I don't mean the slider, I mean in the game editor itself.

It has to do with the way the AI trades. When more AI knows techs you're researching, then the techs are cheaper for you to learn. This is not at all uncommon.

What you could try and do is in the editor go to the World Sizes Tab, and increase the tech rate to a higher value. This will slow down research. You can also go to the difficulty tab and put the 'Cost Factor' at ten, and this will put you and the AI on the save level for researching.

Thanks Turner.

I figured that as far as the tech settings, I guess what I was getting at was do you have any idea what I should change the settings to?

I don't want to mess with the settings on the difficulty to make it easier for me - I just want to make it harder for everyone, including myself, as you say to slow it down some.

I guess I can just play with the numbers and test it, but if you have any ideas as to a specific number, that'd be great. Thanks!

Well, as I said in the second paragraph, increase the tech rate to a higher number under the world sizes tab. This is a balancer so that the games on small maps don't lag behind really bad, and that the larger maps don't have everything researched by 0AD.

Do play around with it. And check out the Creation and Customization subfora for any editing help/tips.

Good luck! Make sure you don't save it as the civ3.bi* file...this is the default rules and if this gets messed up you'll need to reinstall.
