I was wondering what people thought about no tech trading in Civ 5? I know there are research agreements, which is a cool idea...but tech trading is out. Seems to me like no tech trading would be an interesting idea. I know it was always an option in Civ 4, but having research agreements instead seems pretty sweet. If there really isn't any tech trading, I think things will change quite a bit, particularly on higher difficulty levels, for people who are used to researching uncommon techs and trading them with all AI civs. Pretty cool!

I never liked tech trading. It makes all civs have the same techs, and when deciding what to research you didn't ask yourself "what do I need?", but "what doesn't the AI have?". I usually played without tech trading, so this change is good for me. I don't fully understand how the research agreements work, I have to play to tell if they are a good idea.

Do we already know how it will work? If I have 300 research/turn and the AI has 200, do I get any bonus or it is always a better trade for the civ with less research?

If an enemy city is being captured, will Civ V allow to steal 1 tech that is missing to the conqueror ?

I think tech trading is an important part of Civ. It lets you shoot for certain techs to fill out your strategy without having to waste time going back to research the ones you passed by.

On the other hand I do understand the point that with trading, everyone will have the same technology and the civilizations will not be differienciated.

"Technology trading has been removed in favor of joint technological ventures. Two civilizations at peace can form a research pact, which for an initial investment of gold will provide both with a random unknown technology after 20 turns as long as they remain at peace. However, it is possible for a civilization to sign a research agreement for the sole purpose of getting an enemy to spend money which could be used for other purposes; AI civilizations are programmed to sometimes use this tactic before declaring war."

What a tactic to use. Devilish.

The only thing I am interested in seeing is what impact this will have on higher levels. Now, I am a Monarch level player so tech trading isn't really a big deal. BUt from what I hear, once you reach Emperor, Immortal and Diety, the AI bonuses are so significant that tech trading is a must.

Plus, the AI is supposed to be better in CIV V. It will surely be interesting.

from what i'v read, higher difficulties in civ5 are more about the AI making better decisions than just having lots of bonuses. not saying the bonuses aren;t there, but they may be less pronounced if the AI really can make better choices.

Ahh yes. Good point. I remember reading that as well.

they say that, but im a sceptic

I doubt it
I'm pretty sure that as soon as I play it on the hardest difficulty, I can just go 4 steps with the Settlers and find a gigantic civilization on the other side of my continent, like in CIV

I guess after this we all know what it means if Monty comes up to you and says: "Hey lets do a super cool research pact as a sign of the friendship of our nations"
