Text invisible in 1.61

I just decided to start playing Civ4 again and finally downloaded the 1.61 patch (upgrading straight from 1.09). However, after I installed the patch, all of the text in the opening screen had become invisible. I could still click on links, but there was no text anywhere. Can someone explain what I need to do to fix this?

Edit: I have Blue Marble Terrain installed, if that makes a difference, but no other mods as far as I can remember.

Yeah, delete the custom assets directory, and clear the cache (a hidden folder under "my games\civ\").

What? I don't have a "My games" folder, let alone a "Civ" subfolder. I deleted CustomAssets and it didn't help.

Sometimes you search or search twice. There are 8 months of problems and solutions here already.
