The AI doesn't actually see the whole map

Actually, the world map works BOTH ways. I was on an isolated continent. (Kill the only other Civ there). When I finally get contact with the main land mass, the computer wanted absurd demands for the World Map. I finally got the map, when I put a tech for trade. Then all of a sudden, the map price became a joke.

If they could see the whole map that would be a very clear form of cheating, which it is not supposed to do. Besides, what would be the point of the computer trading for world maps and sending out scouts if they could see the whole thing already? Deceiving the player into thinking they actually NEED to do those things?

Hrm. I remember the first series of world map trades in my game, in the medival period, and the price was outrageous. I jumped WAY ahead in the tech lead. For the rest of the Medieval period, no one would give anything additional for the World map.

In the inudstrial age (close to 1000 years later) the price for the world map went back up. It seems the AI is looking to see what you know about who. Kinda like the computer doing reconissance with your units.

Yes, he doesn't.

DON'T let him see it. I was playing the atzecs. Blitzed the Americans out of the game. Found the Indians by themselves. Killed them before they got War elephants. Found three small islands north of me. Get the first, the second. This was around the time I traded maps. As I start moving toward the third, the French land and place 3 cities. Babylon lands one. And a computer player lands in the SINGLE spot on my continent note part of my borders.

I quit in disgust.

Trading maps can be suicide!

The minute I traded even my territory map, every AI in the game declared war on me. I think it's because they didn't know I had an iron monopoly. I still won, though, because I had a good start.

I agree, trading maps can be a VERY BAD THING. Especially later in the game, when your nation is larger, and has weaknesses left best unknown to the AI.
