A short while after sending those messages yesterday, I received this in my inbox:

Dear Koondrad & all Locos,

We appreciate your quick responses – it’s early still, but it sounds like we share a common foundation to build peace and prosperity for both our peoples.

We would like to propose a peace treaty and a technology trade.

First: The peace treaty: what if we both promised to not attack the other/declare war on the other without giving at least 10 turns of notice?
We believe this could give us a good safe foundation to work from – maybe we could even expand the minimum notice period as our relationship grows? We’re eager to hear any thoughts you have on this.

Second: Technology Trading: We’d like to offer you knowledge of Animal Husbandry and Hunting (total base science cost = 140 ) for Sailing (100 )
However, if you’re interested in a more aggressive deal, we can also offer you Iron Working and Hunting (total = 240 ) for your knowledge of Sailing and Monotheism (total = 220 )

The Leader has crafted both of these deals to be weighted heavily in your favor to show his good will and extend the hand of friendship with more than just flowery words.

For the peace treaty, it sounds llike they really want peace. Maybe we are near them or tey are weak in military. I guess we don't have much choice but to take it if we want to have a good relationship.

On the trades we are about to trade for AH anyway, so I want to see how we look after that before deciding.

Iron Working would be useful, some of our hills are bound to have it, and it would make for faster researching of Metal Casting. I would REALLY like to build the Colossus for all the reasons I've stated before (money/science/water map).

Because of this, the trade would actually be worth much more to them than to us, only about 140 beakers for us and still 220 for them. The last thing we can do with a team so far ahead in technology is propose them unfair trades.

Perhaps we could send a polite letter explaining that the trades were not good for us, as we were about to acquire both technologies anyway.

I'm afraid that as generous as the trades you proposed are, they are not acceptable to us. While your intentions were noble, you unfortunately have limited knowledge of the work of our scientists. They are on the verge of discovering these techs and so we would be gaining considerably less than 240 or 140 beakers.

However, this shouldn't stand in the way of peace between our two nations. Maybe you would like to suggest another trade, or maybe you would permit us to propose one?

IMO, just send it next time. We don't need to wait for days for someone to post and say it is good. I think we can trust you to say the right things.

We're pleased to finally hear back from you!

Though you didn't say it – we assume you must be working on Iron Working – as that was the major part of our proposed deal – so we'll leave that tech out of future negotiations.

That limits our options a bit – but The Leader has developed an alternate plan.
You would still provide Sailing and Monotheism, and Epsilon will in return provide some new knowledge that our wisemen are currently studying. They are near finished, and assure us that we'll have marvelous new ways of counting things (and chopping down trees ) when they are done. This knowledge of "Mathematics" is worth 250 base… so in exchange for us upping the unbalance in your favor even further, we'd like you to send the cheaper of your 2 techs (sailing) right away as a show of good faith.

We'll then offer Math for Monotheism as soon as we have the knowledge - estimated to be 2-3 turns from now.

How does this offer sound?

We also stand ready to sign a peace deal – like the one we last proposed? Just let us know what you'd like it to look like.
