The korean war

Kind of depends on your defenition of victory I guess. The UN forces involved in the whole war were mainly US, but included allies from nearly 20 nations. The North invaded the south and were very close to winning before the UN forces intervened, and landed at Inchon to turned the tide. They drove them back past the 38th Paralell, and then continued further into North Korea. Despite warnings from Trueman and others, and the express warnings from China, McArthur approached the Chinese border. The Chinese attacked with limited Russian support and drove the UN forces back to the 38th Paralell and captured Seul. McArthur began asking to be able to use nuclear weapons and Trueman replaced him with Ridgeway. The war ended soon afterwards with the border around the 38th Paralell once again. It's remained that way since, with Korea split into North and South.

It certainly achieved what it set out to do, but that latter period of the war when the North was invaded was almost pointless really.

Like what private hudson said, it was a victory because North Korea was prevented from conquering S. Korea, however, the objective of conquering N. Korea wan't met

Everyone viewed that war differently, and thus all claim victory. The US because North Korea was prevented from conquering South Korea. Ditto the South Koreans. North Korea also claims victory because they weren't conquered. China also claims victory because an impending invasion was nipped in the bud and pushed back, never mind the body count.

If anything, the war sort of ended with the borders the way they were at the beginning, thus technically no one won anything. :(
