I'm thinking about undertaking an ambitious project about the conquests of the Mongols. I'm going to make a map that stretches from Japan to Eastern Europe. I'm not sure how far south the map should go (Including the Khmer, and southern India or not)
I'm doing Research on the various civs and their leaders that might be in it now, and I'm collecting units.
The various tribes( their leaders and capitals ca. 1206) that may make it in are:
1.)Mongols-Genghis Khan Temujin, Karakorum
2.)Sung-Emperor Ning-Tsung, Hang-chou
3.)Hsi-Hsia-Emperor Tehu?, Ning-hsia
4.)Jurchen Chin-Emperor Chin-Tsung, Peking
5.)Koryo-King Hui-Jong, Kaesong
6.)Tibet-?, Lhasa
7.)Japan-Shikken Hojo Yo****oki, Kamakura
8.)
9.)Qara-Khitai-Emperor Mo-Chu, Balagshur
10.)Khwarazm-Shah Ala-al-din Muhammad, Urgenj
11.)Nan Chao-King Shen Tsung, T'ai-Li
12.)Annam-King Kao Tong, Hue
13.)
14.)Khmer-King Jayavarman VII, Angkor
15.)Assam-
16.)Pagan-King Narapatisithu, Pagan
17.)Delhi Sultanate-Sultan Qutbuddin Aibak, Delhi
18.)Chola-?, Chidambaram
19.)Abbasid Caliphate-Caliph al-Nasir, Baghdad
20.)Seljuks of Rum-Sultan Ghiyathuddin Kai-Khusraw I, Konya
21.)Egypt-Sultan al-Adil, Cairo
22.)Georgia-?, Tiflis
23.)Byzantines-Emperor Theodore I Lascaris, Nicaea
24.)Latin Empire-King Henry I, Constantinople
25.)Bulgars-King Kalojan, Tirnovo
26.)Hungary-King Andreas II, Stuhlweissenburg
27.)Russia-Prince Alexander Nevsky, Novgorod
28.)Poland-?, Gnesen
29.)Sweden-Swerker the Younger, Uppsala
30.)Venice-Doge Pietro Ziani, Venice
31.)Germany-Emperor Otto IV, Vienna

ca. 1206 the northern Song Dynasty is already replaced, first by the Jurchen (aka the Jin, vassals of the Liao); their territory ran in a rough triangle from Qin to Kaifeng to the Korean (Koryo) border). Directly west, centered on the Yellow River with their capitol at Xingqing would have been the Xixia (as of 1035) with the Mongols directly to their north.

North of the Jin and Korea and east of the Mongols would have been another Jurchen/Liao state, Dongxhen (centered around modern Nanjing).

Directly west of the Song and SW of Xixia the Tibetans; south of Tibet and west of the SOng the Nanzhao (modern Yunnan province). Annam (North Vietnam) directly south of Nanzhou and the Song.

Other "states" --

Champa (South Vietnam)
Khmer (Cambodia & Laos)

Nomadic Uighurs to the west of the Mongols.

Mongols conquered the Jin in 1234 and the Song by 1278.
Kamakura Shogunates
Koryo under Jin, Yuan (mongol) and Ming overlordships 1196-1392

Capitol cities:

Dongzhen - n/a - capitol "circuit - but IMO use Nanjing
Jin - Bian (Kaifeng)
Nanzhou - Dali
Song - Lin'an (Hangzhou)
Xixia - Xingqing

Some of these are "imprecise" in that exact dates of conquest, overlordship, etc., might not be reflected -- but it's pretty close ;).

Kubz, I was waiting for conquests before I was going to restart my one. Oh well, I had another project I was going to complete first anyway.

Anyway, for mine (of the top of my head) the civs were:
Mongolia, Jurchen Jin, Song China, Xi-Xia, Qara-Khitai, Khwarazm, Egypt (instead of Ayyubid or Mameluke so when the changeover happened, it it still correct historically), Byzantium (included Nicaea, Epirus, Georgia and the Trapezumtine Empire), Italy (included Papal States, Latin Empire, and all Italian cities), Germany (not HRE as Italy was separate), France (included Crusader States), Abbasid Caliphate, Russia (all Rus states), Delhi, Hindustan (Hindu India, Tibet and SE Asia), Hungary, Japan (Japan and Korea) and the Turks (collective of Ghuzz, Volga Bulgars, Bulgars, Ghazis)

Rename Iconium to Konya. You won't need the Uighurs as they were part of the Qara-Khitai Empire or conquered by Xi-Xia. Khwarazm's capital was Urgenj, but be sure to also have Bukhara, Merv and Urgenj as major cities too. But you should make some changes here; Khwarazm conquered most of the territories in West Central Asia in 1212 - 1215 so give them those territories at the start IMO so they actually have them when the Mongols come along. The Qara-Khitai capital should be at Al-Malik (you should find it on any historical map of that period; it is Almaty (Alma-Ata) in southern Kazakhstan) as thats where they withdrew to after losing Samarqand.

I have a map for you. It stretches from Japan to the just over the Black sea, and down to India, and Khemer.

Italy and Germany, and Scandanavia are not on the map, but They did'nt have that much interaction with them anyways, except some Italian traders, and German crusaders.

Its not done yet, but I can post a pic if it so far if your interested.

Thank you, all you have been helpful. The hardest part so far is getting all the developments in Asia straight and finding city names and leaders. Bombshoo, I would be interested in seeing your map, but I have my heart set on at least the domains of the Teutonic Knights (Prussia, Latvia) to be on the map I plan to use. Finding units has been fairly easy. I have a variety of Mongol horsemen designed by Kinboat. Samurai, Crusaders, War Elephants, Hwach'a will be in the conquest. I can use the Ansar warrior for the Mamluk unit, and possibly the Beserk for the Byzantine Varangian guard. I found a excellent Teutonic knight, as well as a "Kublai Khan" boat at this site. The old Civ II Mongol scenario had a couple units I should do some research on: The "Turks" had a cavalry unit called an Ascaris, and the Chinese had a cavalry unit called a Sheng Ch'uan. I also need to find info on siege engines of the period.

The Mongols proved to be good city takers but since it is not really a local tradition for them, it is considered they relied mostly on foreign groups for artillery, the Chinese being the most important one.

Here is a picture of one, check dbaol.com + follow explore armies to get some pics of different troops of the area. If need be, you can even put some unit requests using these pics, it is done a lot here.

While it's true that Scandinavia didn't have much interaction with the Mongols, Sweden did theoretically have a common border with the Golden Horde between 1478 (Muscovy's conquest of Novgorod) and 1480 (Muscovy's formal independence from the Golden Horde). Thought someone might be interested to know! :D

For Venice

Civ: Venetian Republic or Serenissima (the Calm)
Capitol: Venice :)
Leader: doge Pietro Ziani

Cities: verona, treviso, padova (padua), mantova, vicenza, trieste, fiume, belluno, pordenone and more cities in coast of Croatia, Albania and ex-Jugoslavia.

Just click the link. It is not done yet, and I apologize it wouldn't let me post it here. All it's on the link is the picture. It also looks a tiny bit grainy and scrunched in that picture, which I also apologize for. It also includes Egypt, so you could have the Mamlukes which I don't think you mentioned. They did battle the Mongols though.

Its true that the Scandinavians did not have much interaction with the Mongols but I wanted to throw Sweden in there for the sake of the Russians being a more interesting civ to play. Alexander Nevsky was a great hero to the Russians around the time this conquest takes place. He battled Mongols, Teutonic Knights, and Swedes.

Does anyone know who should start with the city of Xanadu (Shang-tu); is it the Chin or the Khitan?
