ok, may be talking mince here but I need to check it out.

has anyone noticed in C3C that the AI tend to steer away from horseback riding until they've got the other techs??

In about 4 of my last games I've traded everything with the AI and am waiting for that glorious moment to go up an age then realise that I've not got Horseback Riding and no one else does so I can't trade?? So i need to trade it myself and wait for some other civ to research it so I can trade.

if my memory serves me well it used to be similar in Vanilla Civ and PTW with Polythesism and Philosophy but now those two techs have been really upgraded, making them more desirable to the AI but Horseback Riding is still the same as it's always been

I've seen the AI research more important techs before horseback riding, however, I don't think they are avoiding it because they don't want it. I think it's just not a priority. They always buy/trade it from me if I get it. They also pay lots for philosophy... presumably so they can build Museum of Mausollos.

I've seen it both ways. Same with Literature. Sometimes I can get those two before the AI, but usually, one of them gets them first. Also, if the AI hasn't reserached horseback riding yet, and you are almost ready to go up an age, you may want to increase your level.

From my experience, HBR tends to get research in its normal order. IMO, the AI tends to research techs in an all too predictable pattern so a litle variety is a good thing.

For me the tech that never gets researched is Lit. I also seem to notice that the would rather start on the Middle Ages than research the two govts in the AA. All three of these seem to make great trade fodder.

In my game, the AI still choose HBR in a normal order like before. The only tech they always avoid is Literature except in the higher level. BTW I`m using 1.15. Maybe you should update your game.

It does seem kind of strange that they avoid Literature, as the Great Library is so incredibly valuable to the weaker civs. Well, computer programmers can only be so neurotic about ai desision making.

I buy Horseback riding from the AI quite frequently. I guess im only first to it halv of the times. My guess is that since its one of the cheapest techs in the mid-row (just after the 7 stater techs) it is popped from a goody hut most of the time.
