I once named EVERY UNIT and CITY in one game. .
The game lasted a long time. (I got to 'attack unit 503' and '174' as a city name)

I always rename ships, sometimes rename cities, and like to rename units sometimes. When I'm feeling bored, I'll name units (as they're produced) stuff like "6th Houston Rifles" for the sixth rifleman out of Houston. But every ship in my game that's produced gets a name.

I think you should only rename victoryes uints that create great leaders and new cities.

When my warrior gave me a military GL I renamed him Pwnz0rz.

That's a good one, do you play CS:S? I always name my Elite*

1932 ad Hero etc...

also whenever I am making the main city on a world map in Japan, it is Neo Tokyo.

What I like to do is to rename conquered cities to sound more like names of my own civ. For example, London would become "Londinium" if I'm Roman or "Londres" if I'm French. Sometimes it's pretty hard to come up with good names though.

Regarding captured cities, I use the following nomenclature where CIV is name of original owner

Name >CIV - captured city
Name +CIV - city which has flipped to me
Name =CIV - gained through peace negotiations
Name >CIV* - capital city captured
Name >CIV*RIP - last city captured which destroys the civilization

When playing as the Babylonians I will name the *elites after Babylonian and Assyrian Kings; The Hammurabi Division, The Ashurbanipal Division, The Shalmaneser Division, The Sargon Division. When I run out of names because I have used all the names provided, I will look for an atlas, modern or historical and name cities after actual places, so when I went over New What ever in my Chinese game I renamed Beijing 3 to something like Ni Hao(if you speak Chinese you may understand)... In Civ 2 you could rename cities if you sent a spy into it so I would always rename them right before I took them. In Alpha Centauri I renamed a lot of cities, especially if I was playing the Hive, I once captured the Rapture and it was Miriams last city so I named it "The Capture"

I name my elite units always something in the form like:
hey did YOU just killed that guy?
OMG they killed Kenny!
