From wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Englander

a "Little Englander" is applied to those who are regarded as xenophobic and/or overly nationalistic and are often accused of being ignorant and boorish. It is frequently applied to those who are against membership of the European Union. English people who mistakenly refer to the whole of the UK or Britain as "England" may also be called "Little Englanders".

It has come to recently describe people who wish to break up the United Kingdom and for England to be an independent nation.

That's what "little Englander" means. Doesn't that describe a lot of people in this thread very well?

Also note the very last sentence. for England to be an independent nation. The solicitor guy told you about it pages ago, but nobody listened. England doesn't even exist as an independent nation and hasn't since 1707.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_England

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_former_sovereign_states

A Treaty of Union was agreed on 22 July 1706, and following the Acts of Union of 1707, which created the Kingdom of Great Britain, the independence of the Kingdoms of England and Scotland came to an end on 1 May 1707

Come on give it your best shot. England exists no more than Scotland does...less actually but that's for another post. :)

Nice and simple, read.

Is that addressed at me? If so, I don't appreciate the patronising tone.

I'm not disputing that the manual and game contains incorrect statements, I was taking you up on your claim that games like this were "taking over in the minds of the younger generation", and therefore that the small numbers of errors were somehow damaging.

I would like to know on what grounds you have to say that. There are literally millions of examples of entertainment media re-writing history.

That doesn't make it right, but it does make it unfair to single out this game with such passion.

If the state of education is as terrible as you claim for this game to dominate kids' knowledge of history then at least be thankful that they are at least learning something, even if it's just "the Ottomans existed" rather than just playing Halo.

what a thouroughly amusing and enlightening thread.

"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former". Albert Einstein

How true.

England exists no more than Scotland does...

Then what are you arguing about?

You win. England doesn't Exist. Scotland doesn't exist.

You're all german and never achieved anything of note! :)

You now have no drum to beat with that chip on your shoulder.

Settled. Now move on.

England is already in the game and the Mongol empire was mainly empty land mass.

England is not the british empire, that's like saying russia is the soviet union. British empire included wales, scotland, northern ireland, and all of their overseas possessions. The soviet union.incuded russia itself and all of its satellite countries. And the mongol empire included china, norhern india, persia, parts of eastern europe......pretty sure none of that is empty landmass......

Is that addressed at me? If so, I don't appreciate the patronising tone.

If it was addressed to you I'd have quoted something you said. EDIT - the mod merged my posts so it looks like it was addressed to you. Well played mod. Binky, I apologise for that but it was not addressed to you originally.

(for your own sanity, I'll let you know that it was a general statement and not addressed to anyone in particular)

We're talking about the lady gaga generation. History is made on tv every night. Kids are believing less and less what they read and more and more what they get shoved in their faces. How else do you explain the ignorance?

That doesn't make it right, but it does make it unfair to single out this game with such passion.

If I am passionate about it then it's for a good reason. I think i've outlined those reasons. What would you have me do, forget all about it? Let Firaxis rewrite history? Which part of this don't you understand? This isn't about some Finnish people being pissed at Russia for a while. It's not the same.

If the state of education is as terrible as you claim for this game to dominate kids knowledge of history then at least be thankful that they are at least learning something, even if it's just "the Ottomans existed" rather than just playing Halo.

I agree with that. But it's no excuse for getting history so badly wrong.

This is the equivalent of the Portuguese being labelled as Spanish and the Dutch being labelled as German...and all of the good things the smaller nation brought to the world were stolen by their larger neighbour.

In 50 years, "English" could very easily be renamed "American". Hell you know what, that could happen today and nobody except the English would care. Do you get it?

The mongols were a raging horde of bandits and marauders. They definitely had a huge impact on world history, but their cultural and scientific impact was almost zero.

True the mongols didnt have a huge impact on the world with their.own culture or scientific achievements, but they spread culture and science from asia to europe and back and had a huge influence on civilization itself
