Hi

Ok so here is the dealio--I'm minding my on business sending swordsman into india to make em pay for building their empire on my land before I could get there >:). On the way a Great Proph shows up. I have no other real use for him so I have him lightbulb Theology. I get the message do i want to switch to theocracy and I'm thinking sure I'm in a war and the swordsman all qued up could benefit.

Now normally I hardly ever evr use theocracy. Most of the time I like using Organized Religion. But I'm playing at a bit higher diffs than I usually do and sometimes organized is just too expensive to run too early. So it is making me use diff religion civs than I normally do. So I am not very experinced with using theocracy.

Now I do know it is supposed to stop non state religion spread. I even remember waay back early on in vanillia or warlords I forget exactly but pre BtS moving a missionary into another civs city and not allowed to try to spread my rleigion cuz they had a diff state religion and were running theocracy.

Now here is the part that has me confused. Theology got me a free missionary. So I do what I normally do if I found a religion with a free missionary I send over to my capitol to try to spread it there. When he gets there there at first I am thinking aww nuts I just switched to theocracy and my state religions buddism so he wont be able to spread. BUT he can and he does. Well I am using the unnooffical patch by Buhric so I so save the game exit out and switch back the regular game.dll and then restart and use world builder to make a new chruistian missionary and try to spread it in a diff city and yep he still can spread christianity even though my state religion is buddism (and yeah I dbl checked my state religion IS buddism and Theocracy IS running.)

Now is this how it is supposed to work? I always thoguht non state religion spread meant even missionary couldnt spread nonstate religions. Does it only apply to missionaries from other civs and not your own or was it some kind of mistake or bug or change in BtS or maybe it just works differently than what I always thought or something :/

Any religion you found can be spread with theocracy enabled. At least I'm pretty sure thats how it's supposed to work. I think it just stops other civs from spreading religions to you.

Interesting. Learn something new everyday I suppose :mischief:

That would make no difference in my current game where I founded Buddishism, Confussionism, Taoism & Islam while Isabella founded the other 3 (Hinduism, Judaism & Christianity) and I eliminated Isabella so I am in control of all 7 Religion for the first time not on Chieftain level :king:

AFAIK you can spread religion freely to your own cities under Theocracy regardless of whether you founded it or not.

An interesting thing to know is that you can gift you missionaries to an AI who's running Theocracy and they'll spread it to their own cities for you :D

yup, you can spread any religion within your borders during theocracy. the point of it is that others can't spread their religions, and natural spread of any other religion won't work.

gifting missionaries is a way to spread your religion to somebody in theocracy. i've never seen the AI not use a missionary i gifted, but maybe they're smarter about that with the new AP, i don't really know. if you don't have OB to just gift a missionary, you can gift a caravel with a missionary on it. but you don't get the caravel back /sigh.

note that in BtS there are some random events and quest rewards that can spread someone's state religion to another civ's cities. those events will spread religion even to a city with a religion already, and even to a civ running theocracy. catching all the enemy spies so that nobody ever takes you out of theocracy or changes your religion is hard enough, and that's no guarantee. with random events on, there is no way to be sure you won't get a religion you don't want in your empire. as in, the AP religion when you really really don't want somebody else to have the diplo victory option .
