Things in Civ3 that would make no sense in real life

Unrestricted sea voyaging. In Civ I can take my caravels to the Arctic without any ill effects. In reality they would freeze their 15th-century butts to death. And if they weren't killed by exposure, they could be attacked by polar bears or rabid penguins. Even fairly modern ships might perish in the waters near the icecaps. ("Iceberg, dead ahead!")

I believe this is actually simulated, and here's how.

In civ, circling the poled takes as long as circling the equator. Instead of a cilindricle world, imagine lotsa icebergs and stuff.
 
@ Perseopolis:
Nothing wrong with allowing arbitrary numbers of research paths to be open at once. Just let the player allocate his beakers by percentage to each open research project.

But ... no, that would be both easy and logical.
