this application has requested runtime to exterminate it in an unusual way

Yeah, I'm not even sure it's 2k games fault.

I've tested some more things last night and today:
-Checked for any DirectX 11 updates, ran DXDiag with everything reporting fine
-Uninstalled and reinstalled Visual C++ 2008 Runtime (no change)
-Searched my computer any kind of error log (nothing was found)
-Checked the "Event Viewer" (eventvwr.msc) ... nothing
-Now in the process of reinstalling Steam and Civ5

There's another way the program has been crashing: when I go to save the game and click on "SteamCloud" saves. This leads me to believe that the real problem is how the game is communicating with Steam Cloud via the Visual C++ Runtime. In the past, I have had many, many problems with the F'ing VCC Runtime (I used to work in IT and its used all over the place in Microsoft applications (duh)). The way I usually got things to work there was some kind of registry fix. So a patch might work for that or I'll do the manual regedit'ing since I'm impatient and want to play Civ5.

The one thing that may have been my fault is that I changed the "Steam Community In-Game" option while Civ5 was already running. This easily could have cause a registry corruption. Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean a reinstall with replace all the registry errors. Windows program coders seem to have a nasty habit of leaving behind half the registry keys that are created by a program.

Sorry for the diatribe, it's just aggravating when my Tech doesn't work the way I want it to. :crazyeye:

I also forgot to add that this was an entirely new install. My hard drive died so I got a new one yesterday and reinstalled Windows 7 and Civ5.

I stumbled upon a "fix" from one of the similar posts on the 2K Games forum from jakaboy:
Steps taken:

1. Disable steam cloud synchronization (steam -> settings -> downloads+cloud)
2. Take steam offline (steam -> go offline)

Result:

Game no longer crashes when I click "Load Game". I can load games successfully.

Can't use Steam Cloud but who cares... played Civ 1 through 4 just fine without it.
