Does anyone have good tips for this scenario? I have read threads about it, but they are of no help because I don't have enough gold to build lots of ranged units and my enemies don't usually come in just one path like people say they should! It seems a big key to winning this scenario is purchasing cities/units/techs at the right time but nobody says when the right time is! How far do I have to research? Scouting, Riders, and Macemen are obvious but the others don't seem to have a benefit or are too costly.

deanej,

I've not yet played this scenario so can only point you to threads. You mention that you've read 'threads' but I don't know what you have and haven't seen, but I'll refer you to;
  • Defense - strategies? ... that includes some pointers. It's in the 'Civ4 BTS - Mods & Scenarios' forum which might be a better place to check out, as this 'Civ4 - Strategy & Tips' forum tends to concentrate on the standard game.
I hope these lnks are of help (esp. the succession game). Best of luck! :)

I noticed that the people in those threads had units all over. I've been having defenders around Athens and waiting for the enemy to suicide its units into mine - is this a bad strategy? I don't want to micromanage my units - It's bad enough that there even it a turn timer. I couldn't really get a feel from there what the optimal place to put the stack of ranged units is, or how they got enough gold to have so many units. I think my game may be bugged - the succession game started with 400 gold, but I only got 300 to start!

EDIT: I'm also very worried about Psycho Samurais and Suicide Grenadiers. It takes so many ranged units to kill an enemy (at least 6 in my experience) and I usually face so many units at a time in around round 9 and later (about 10-20 around Athens at any given time) that I don't know how to position my units. I could really use a clear-cut strategy for those of us who are perma-noobs (like me).

Also, how many cities should I have, where should they be placed, in what order, and how many units do I need to have away from Athens exploring the map and what route should they follow?

I think you answered your own question. The further out from your towns your bombard units are, the more bombarding they can do. You can hit the psycho sams 4-5 times before they reach your cities.

Well, I don't know how to defend farther out. The further from Athens you go, the more unpredictable the enemy path is. I also usually face a stack of 5-10 enemy units every other tile at that part of the game.

I'm finding money to be a HUGE problem in this scenario. If you place a city every round, you won't be able to buy anything else in round two, and if I lose a forest warrior to a lion in round one, that means that I only have one defender for round two, and if he dies, then I lose.

I may also be having problems with the advanced start. I've never been able to use that feature effectively. In the Charlemagne scenario I had the AI place everything for me.
