Ok I've played Civ for years now and wanted something new.So I downloaded Tom War, this "was not a zip archive" whatever that means. Then I downloaded Through the Ages and runned the installer .I set it into my Mod folder in the Beyond the sword folder. It appeared on the mod menu but wouldn't start. Then I tried rise of mankind and copied it into my mod folder, it also appeared but didn't start. Then I downloaded the 3.19 patch but every every time I tried to install it it crashed.

I've got Civ Complete and I'M running it on a Vista Pc. Please can someone help me !!!! Thanks in advance

Did you run the 3.19 patch as administrator ie: right click on the .exe and choose run as administrator? If not try that.

I have little knowledge of Mods, but you have to make sure that the mod matches the civ patch you have so a mod for BTS 3.19 will not work on 3.17, similarly one for 3.17 will not work on 3.19 so check what version it is for when you download the mod.

Thanks but loading the patch installer as a adminstraator didn't
work.

I don't know this as this game was a gift. But as I live in England I presume it's the european version

I patch it to 3.17 and I've got rise of mankind 2.52 working so I can load it.However when I load a custom game it says : the application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.it wants me contanct the support team.

Tom,

I feel your frustration with the runtime error message. I have posted numerous times here and nobody knows how to fix this error. I even contacted the author of the mod you are referencing and he, too, was clueless as to what was causing the problem. In the end, I had to stop using the mod and pretty much have stopped playing Civ IV all together because it is riddled with errors. Errors that not even the 3.19 patch can address. Just look at how many people are posting here with 3.19 problems and I think that pretty much sums up everything. My hopes in you finding a solution to your problems.

I give up with mods ,I spend more time trying to make them work than playing them.If I don't get it working today I'M going to stop playing mods.Does this this error happen on both xp and vista and do administrator rights effect it?

Hello all... just joined as I have a really frustrating issue that I am really hoping for some help with...

I recently found that civ was occasionally just stopping for no apparent reason. Anyway, I then noticed a few days ago (whilst I still had vista, I now have windows 7) that when I scrolled up quickly, a line appeared in the screen as though the graphics card was struggling to cope... but this has never happened before. But now I have upgraded to 7, it wont even work?! Well... it did to start with, but then I had to reinstall it for another reason and now when I try to start it, it just flashes on and off like its trying to start up, and then I get an error message... saying... initialise renderer failed. check directx installation, latest graphics drivers (I downloaded the latest drivers when I got 7) and graphics settings
-width = 1360
-height = 768
-flags =oxc
-hwnd = 0x1105d0
-adaptrid = 0
-deviceid = 1
error"

So... if anyone has any advice for me, it would be so so so appreciated... as i am desperate to play! Thanks guys.
