I've been watching some diff. strategies on you tube concerning civ 4 colonization and mods have been mentioned like TAC,I've found info on this mod and after reading some of the info it seems hard to do...
Is there some kind of manual like "installing mods for dummies",I'd like to raise the level of the game but am concerned about screwing something up...thanks

It's quite simple. In your install dir, you have Colonization.exe. There you create a folder called "Mods" (if it's not already there). It doesn't look like it is case sensitive, though I haven't experimented enough to tell for sure. You place the folder for the mod inside Mods. If you have problems creating the Mods folder, you can also add it in My documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization IV Colonization. That however can cause problems if you have non-ascii characters in your username.

If you place the mod correctly, it can be loaded from the main menu. Once this is working, it will be possible to make an alias to start the game directly in a specific mod. Make an alias to the game exe, edit properties and add mod="modname" to arguments, or something like that.

Except for the paths/exe name, none of this is specific to Colonization. The same applies to any game using the civ4 engine.

_civ4custommods...is this the folder your talking about
so for each game mod it goes to the specific game folder(does that make sense)
is the TAC mod a good 1st mod or do you have other suggestions and where is the best place to get mods...thanks for your help

I found this in coloniztion when I opened the game...TAC2.03_final does this mean I already have the mod...thanks

Most likely. If you can load it, then yes :)

Mods:
TAC: a good starting point for people who haven't tried mods before
RaR: expansion of TAC. Recommended for experienced players
RaRE: expansion of RaR

DoaNE: significant changes to the game engine
M:C: trying NOT to be colonization. Essentially civ4 in the colonization engine (tech tree and stuff like that)
Colonization 2071: trying not to be colonization either
