Too good not to be mentioned!

As I was casually checking things out in the game and noticed this sweet spot for a new city. It is located just east of the mongol main island. The area is quite safe, even with some mongol core cities still uncaptured. Shall we send an engineer here now or yesterday?

That's a beauty!
I love 4-special spots, and this will have the benefit of 2 whales, 2 fish and the possibility of building a harbour and an offshore platform. :goodjob:
Well spotted Spice! I have to laugh at the partisan on his own by that island though! Whose is the irrigation to the north of the picture? I assume it's a Mongol colony but it could be someone else's.

The irrigation to the north-east is owned by a small mongol colony. It is located on a very large island that is almost empty, except for the mongol outposts of Shangtu and Kazan (size 5 and 3).
Screenshot (The island partly visible in the lower left corner is the goody-island from the first screenshot)

Those colonies would in fact be rather easy to conquer, considering none of them has city walls. It would also provide us with unlimited space for founding new cities, if we should feel expansionistic. :)

Yes - I spy another 4-special location just dying to be settled. :D If we could somehow just destroy Kazan.

I'd also like to point out that these are clearly not the only 2 cities on that island. The irrigation I mentioned is not within the city radius of Shangtu and the AI isn't so dumb as to irrigate a random site so there must be a city there in the shadow. Is there any chance of some more screenies of the rest of the world? Please... please... bitte... bitte... :D

I bet we could destroy Kazan if we only put some effort into it (and maybe some money to rush-build an engineer..). Some more screenies, you say? Sure, but I´d better put them in the turn thread so other people can find them more easily. :)

(seriously, with my views on used-land overlapping, I consider myself an expert at destroying unwanted cities)

:D

I always knew General Ren would not let us down when it comes to Mongol hunting. :D

I don't know why you worry so much about overlapping cities. I suppose that you must have the perfectionist characteristic, but being a supporter of Communism then that would suggest warlike too - a rare combination!

I would like to suggest that we explore the darkness to the bottom right of the world map at some point. A transport is probably the best vehicle for this kind of thing as it doesn't count for unhappiness calculations. :goodjob: Of course, a warship could see further, but I wouldn't have thought that there'd be other cities there and they can only see 1 square inland so we should just take an alpine (from Beijing) and pop some huts. If we're lucky, we won't get loads of barbs and we could pick up some cash and some nomads. :D

Alnternately, we can send a transport with a spy as the spy can see two squares, and not just water. There are other Zulu and probably English cities to the South and I'm rather amazed we haven't explored more in this direction. There is quite a lot of space left. The spy would not be as good at hut popping, but I suspect we'll find more cities than huts.

Why the animosity toward Kazan? That Mongol city is miles away and could even possibly be a nice pet.

Are we talking about the annoyingly placed city of Xinjian?

I like Leo's idea of exploring with a spy. Should we pop a barbarian hut, the spy would be better able to retreat or bribe depending. It can also see further into the land portions of islands.

The spy that returned to Canton is a good choice. The transport that dropped the engineers is now heading there anyway.

We'll probalby find some AI outposts as well - maybe a Zulu or English city or two. We may be able to get some advanced tribes as well. Who knows...

The animosity against kazan is due to the great four-special spot three tiles NW of that city, the one that would provide whale, fish, silk and buffalo. :) But the overlap to Kazan would be too large, so the mongols are better "moved".

Fellow Fanatics, when do we pick up an engineer from Triton and and send it to the sweet spot from the first screenshot? A worthy place for Elibbtropolis perhaps? Or Civaddictquarters? Or Shannonville?

It IS a great spot - and thanks for the explanation of Kazan.

The engineer north of Tsingtao was actually going to build a city that was decided upon a while ago. It will go in the spot to get the fish and the whales there.

How about this: Engineers are pretty cheap to rush, so why not use the one that's on the Mongol island right now? We can get a few others up and running fairly quickly, there.

The rails on the Mongol can wait a few turns now as we're now moving down from Aleppo and not out of Basra any longer. Though we will get them up quickly once a few engineers are rushed.

This will likely mean THREE cities will be created in the next batch of turns: The "sweet spot", north of Heidelberg, and in the Triton Province. Lots of names to dish out, and I think I have some ideas.

The mongol engineer thing sounds good to me. :) Three new cities, that is nice. And perhaps a fourth soon to come from the other "dropped off" engineer?

I like that sweet spot on the island soooo much, that could turn into a nice city.:D That partisan on the island is an indication how dumb the AI can be.....:p

That partisan was actually one of two that popped up on that island when we took the city of Basra. One transported somewhere or was disbanded when they were asked to move their troops and actually complied (the turn before we were allowed to take Aleppo).

I think that one's name is Gilligan.
