when u play on larger maps, and have so many civs playing theres more than can fit in the circle... how am i meant to contact the others?

You can click the little "D" on the status screen in the lower right. This brings up the list of all contacted CIVs from which to choose.

Although the advisor only displays 8 you can at least pick which 8. Shift-Right-Click on one you'd like to switch, and it (iirc) brings up a small menu allowing you to pick from a list of non-displayed Civs.

yep, this is one VERY crappy part of civ.
How the programmers could think of this most rediculous implementation still agrivates me every time i play with more than 8.

I didn't know about the shift-right. If you press D you don't know if he has any MPP, which is good to know if you attack him.

I sometimes attacked someone not in the 8 and then 5 civ declared war on me.

Just a reminder: Civ3 was designed to use 8 Civs, MAX.

That is why the screen was designed the way it was. When it was decided at the last minute (development-wise) to increase the number of Civs allowed, it was too late, and would cost too much money, to redesign the screen, so they came up with the 'Shift-Right-Click' thing to provide *some* useful information.

actually ive found theres a little dropdown list and you can swap between the civs that are visible at will..

..still sux u cant see them all at once... need to see whos at war with who etc!

Interesting!! I'll bet it was a performance issue - more than 8 slowed down the "target" machine. They probably realized that the average system was orders of magnitude faster at the end of Civ3's development than it was at the beginning :)

I play large maps. I arrange my enemies by order of power in a counter clockwise position, with the most powerful enemy to on the left when I face the screen. That way I can see the 7 most powerful threats all at once and I cycle through the weaklings one at a time, keeping them in the one o'clock position. They dont matter as much so I dont need to look at them all the time. Sometimes I need to make adjustments to the order as theier power goes up and down throughout the game.
