Top 100 Scenarios

WillemO, don't worry about Sun Tzu, he doesn't understand why ZWK is made the way it is. Among Sun Tzu's many suggestions is that the Ju-87 Stuka be changed from a bomber to a fighter???

And if I might take the liberty of quoting Alcibiates of A

This is an impressive scenario. There are no engineers, and no railroads, so forget the tried and true tactics of WWII scenarios. Combined arms is the key to battle here. In the early part of the war, Pzkw IIs and Pzkw IIIs are quite effective as combat units. Even Bf-110s have value as long range escorts. Each power has a full range of units to build. A new feature is the use of submarines. Unlike other scenarios, they have zero attack factor. You must have Torpedoe units on the subs to use them in an attack role. The scenario provides for free torpedoe replacement in Geramny, and when you capture it, the coast of France. Most of the wonders have been renamed, with new artwork. As can be seen from the exanple posted above by the author, the units are of the highest quality. This is not just another WWII scenario, but a new approach to the second world war.

I wrote that for the scenario league, and it still stands. JV and Willem, if you need me, e-mail me, cause I won't be around here much anymore. It seems that certain smart-asses have invaded this site, and since I haven't got the time or the desire to bother with them, I'm outa' here. You guys know how to find me.

Try out "Black man's burden" by Carl Fritz. It is really an inspiring experience. I simply love the "hula-hu" sound of the natives attacking, and I'm nominating it just for that sound effect! Otherwise it really is nice put together and fun to play, balanced, fun events, good unit grapx. It really brings the "Scramble for Africa" back to life.

The only thing that is missing is sailable rivers..! But I can live without them, just for the enjoyable playing experience. Also credit must to Carl for keeping the size down, even with the new sound fx.

I also like Jesús Muñoz 30years war scenario, which was the first scenario I downloaded. I haven't been able to play it until recently, but it offers a quite breathtaking and playable simulation of the 30years war! I'm looking forward to your update, Jesús!

For medieval scenarios... Check out my own "Hammer of the North" when Thunderfall posts it to the downloads section sometime soon. I think it is the best simulation of the "viking raids" I have seen. But I was the one who made it... So that's probably a little biased!

Yours Truly,
Morten

Hey Morton,

Thanks for the input...this will really help...I have wanted to play a good Viking Raids scenario...so I'll give yours a try...

I just love the Vikings...

Also, Carl Fritz is a good scenario designers so would like to include some of his work in the Top 100.

Keep the scenarios rolling everyone...I'd like to give a very comprehensive list...your help is appreciated...

John

Er... I think Carl Fritz' scenario is called "Brown Man's Burden" -now I come to think of it, and not "Black man's..." -just in case anyone is wondering... Recommendable, nonetheless!

If you're impatient about "Hammer of the North" and won't wait till it's available from the downloads section, you can download it from the European Civ2 site, here...

But you better have a fast connection, as it is a big piece to swallow. Just over 4,3 MB...!

A list of my favorite scenarios:
  1. Anciet empires: The Early empires by Kull
  2. Of Celts and Iberians by Jesus Balsinde
  3. Imperium Romanum by Bebro
  4. Justian the Great by Carl Fritz
  5. Al-Andulas by Jesus Balsinde
  6. Cross and Crescent by Bebro
  7. Colonies III by John Ellis
  8. Brown man's burden by Carl Fritz
  9. The Second Reich by Micheal Jeszenka
  10. 2194 Days of War by Captain Nemo and Alex Mor
  11. Red Front by Captain Nemo and Alex mor
  12. Dawn of the Dead By Blackcove
  13. Star Trek: Battle of the Alpha Quadrant by Kobayshi
  14. Star Trek: Dominion War by Kobayshi[/list=a]
This list is by cronilogical order, except for the sci-fi, which is alphabetical order. All are great scenarios, but there are plenty more I didn't mention. I would like to say, if your scenario hasn't yet been released, or your pumping your own, it doesn't belong in this thread. If you do good work, the critics will let you know it. If it hasn't been released, than why are you wasting our time?

Alcibiaties, sorry about that. Read the earlier thread, then you'll get the point. John asked for good medieval scenarios around, and I just thought I'd let him know that it's finished. Also, I came to mistitle Carl's scenario, so that was just for clarifying that!

Who else has been pissing on your door today?

Yours Truly,
Morten
I wasn't really refering to you, but that still doesn't mean that poping your own work isn't tre' tacky, and it's not even out yet!

Also, I followed your other thread, and your the guy that doesn't like evnts files, am I not correct? Part three, try not to be so sensitive sunshine, it's bad for the complection.

Oh, and while your at it, why not go all the way and nominate yourself for the hall of fame? In for a penny, in for a pound, eh?

OK, Alcibiaties! Sorry I misunderstood you.

I guess what I am trying to say is that of course I want to advertise for my own work(!) -but if it's any good -sure that must be for others to decide! I like it, anyway, that's why I made it! Surely there's nothing wrong with that?

Also this is my first scenario attempt, so I am very excited to hear what some of you pros think of it. I'm not at all claiming to know the art of the trade very well. -But you're right, this isn't the topic here, so I won't go any deeper into this.

Sure I like events! I just haven't had the opportunity to work with them yet, as I just recently upgraded to MGE...!

Yours Truly,
Morten

No hard feelings here, dude! I hope your work is a big sucess, and is everything you wish it to be.

First off,

I didn't get back to this thread soon enough, mostly because I've been submersed in Texts dealing with famous economists (Marx)and sociologists (Randall Collins)so I apologize for that.

Mostly, I think this is a thread for listing what you like as far scenarios, that's what I set it up for...but since we are on the topic I will briefly say that I am happy to see enthusiastic-first time scenario authors in the Forums, (especially scenario creation) and that are promoting their work because that is a good thing. We all have to sometimes guide that direction as protocol is generally unknown to most folks...heck, I didn't know that people even posted modpacks on the web and I had about a dozen sitting on my hardrive that I played by myself for over a year!

Enough of that...now back to the subject,

Let's get scenarios represented from all catagories, Renaissance is also a catagory and if there any that stand out please tell me.

I would also like to have a few "unusual" scenarios or mods to include that are "fun" to play.

Tell me what you guys like so I can include it...

John

I'd like to recommend Jesús Balsindes quest scenario "Quest for El Dorado" -I have just downloaded it -and played for the last hour or so, and I just had to say this : -that's really a very unusual and special scenario, with lots of atmosphere.

You take charge of a small band of soldiers who has to get thru the jungle to conquer some spanish cities. -But it's like nothing I've ever seen before. It's like the old Amiga game "Lost Patrol", only with spanish soldiers in the age of colonialism, deep deep in the green abyss of southern america...
Scary, and just absorbing. Don't miss this.
-Download from the Spanish Civ2 site. I don't know if its available here at CivFanatics, but try and see if you can find it.

-Added 22th of June : I played this scen all night long, till early in the morning, and I managed to get a marginal win, by conquering 3 out of 5 spanish cities... -This is probably not a scenario I'll play over and over again, once completed. But its really worth playing for the very unusual challenge. There's a lot of suspense, lots of use of atmospheric sound and grapx, and very interesting ways of tweaking the game mechanism. You almost wouldn't know that this is Civ2. It's just pure horror, as one by one your men fall from the fever, or drown in the swamps. And you just barely manage to arrive with half of your men, if you're lucky. Very recommended, if you'd like to try out this kind of quest-scenario.

Mars Now! was quite excellent and imaginative. Kobayashi's "Dominion War" I enjoyed too. "Samurai" (forget who made it) was also very well done.

Question: Are there any existing scenarios for the Mexican Revolution (the one around 1910, where there were multiple factions, including Pancho Villa's, vying for control of Mexico)? Or the Korean War? Or how about the early Polynesians who settled by island-hopping? These could be interesting to play....

So, JV2, when is the top 100 coming out?

I know it seem hard sometimes, but uh...
remember one thing:
through every dark night,
there's a bright day after that,
so no matter how hard it get, stick ya chest out
keep ya head up and handle it.

Maybe I missed it, but I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Allard's "River War'. Highly playable, and oozing with historical atmosphere. It's one a few scenarios that makes road building an indispensable strategic element. It's only vice is that it is intended to be played once -- surprises for the human player are a key element. Still the first one or two (I'm a slow learner
crazyeyes.gif
) playings are an experience!

Beyond this shameless plug, I have also enjoyed Kull's 'Seeds of Greatness' and Balsinde's 'Celts and Iberians'.

allen,

Good suggestions for scenarios...someone needs to take you up on those...Korean war sounds interesting to me...

willem, TOP 100 will probably be out by the end of summer as I would like to post all 100.

Basically, I'd like to take a moment to recap the goal of this project:

I'd like to find scenarios from every category that represent what's reasonably the better scenarios for each historical time period or genre. You should also remember that there may be only one or two that fit what you might think are the best and that's ok...that can help scenario authors to realize the need and possibly create something new...

The TOP 100 will hopefully generate a list of scenarios that people can try out and hopefully get them started on other ways to play civ. While you might like to play historical scenarios, you might want to try something else but you don't feel like reading a review or downloading 10 scenarios just to find one scenario...

In a way, being in the top 100 will mean that there is a little publicity for scenarios that everyone should a try...and hopefully, as new scenarios come out, it will rotate and bring in fresh ones...no judging or rating of course, just the suggestions of players who feel these scenarios represent a good scenario...nothing more

I'm sorry but I don't have any additional scenarios to recommend. However, I was wondering if any of you have the sound files for the Ansteig scenario. I haven't been able to find them anywhere.
