Town battles

The defense level of CITY = TO number of TOWN. ( so you can stop the bad guy in subberb faubourg)

The defense level of TOWN = TO CITY LEVEL devided by # TOWN.

Still more factor can be input in, this is only a general direction.

thanks.

I am begining to like the idea of a unit limit on tiles. Cities should have the highest limit, then forts, then towns, villages, ext, then the normal tiles. You will have to place units outside your cities as well as inside. Another addition to stategy would be that armies have larger dimentions. They have fronts, backs, and flanks, allowing for more strtegy. And a final bonus is that a large army simply looks more impresive when it covers a larger area, as can be seen in this picture:Link

My only fear is that the AI won't get it. In addition, you need to be careful that it does not completely nerfe Hereditary Rule. (Giving the civic some other bonus might help)

I posted this else where but what abaot requiring suplly for units if you can find the post ,it would tie in and force units to meet agressers as they enter into terratory

You shouldn't have a unit limit but if you go over a certain amount of units in a city sqaure people will start getting unhappy, as there are to many military people in the city.

But if you are in a war then it is the opposite. The less units you have the more unhappiness you have, the more units you have in a city the happier they are.

:old: :old: :old:

If I see military troops in the city, I don't feel unhappy. Granted, I probably would be upset if they started marching down the street screaming "Return to your homes immediately! A curfew is now in effect!" but the way it is now I'm not offended by the presense of the military.

But if stacks of doom is really the only way then they won't have something like WW1 when you have the whole army entrenching the entire border now won't you?
Limiting stack size is simple the best solution
Plus it actually gives incentive to build fort
Otherwise, if all your cities are fully entrenched, where will you wanna put your extra units?
Then of course the limit will only work on land units units ie. air or maybe sea shouldn't be effected

It's just that an arbitrary cap seems too, well, arbitrary. There shouldn't be a hardcoded limit on stack size, but there should be penalites to making stacks too large (ie Collateral Damage). Also, what happens when a city reaches its unit max and wants to build another unit?

If you're over your limit and you build a unit tyhen you would get a small amount of unhappiness (ie. 1).
If you saw hundreds of miltary people walking down your street whenthere is no wars on would you want them with guns walking down your street.

The military isn't walking down the street: It's in a barracks outside of town. The troops may go into the town from time to time, but they're not marching down the street with guns at ready unless you're running Police State. Besides, if I saw troops marching past my house, I'd probably be scared, but only because I'd expect something really bad to be going on if that were the case. If troops marching down the street were a normal occurence, I wouldn't mind at all, maybe even throw them a friendly salute.

Wow it's nice to see my simple idea inspired some much discussion.

There's some nice ideas here for sure, but as far as modding the game goes, how would you teach the AI to know how to take advantage of the altered rules? We might end up with a game that the AI has no freakin idea how to play :)

I've found that a good group of programmers if they take some time will be ablt to make it possiblr for comps to be able to play with towns. Anyway, its not about the computer, its about you playing the game.
