Trading crossroads

I'll almost definately post a longer story of the game - to help that I have dozens of screenshots and quite a detailed turn logs so far. My main strategy was to immediately start min research on Writing.

The gamble paid off and after 50 turns I researched it and apparently gained a monopoly on it. I was able to trade it around for seven new techs, some gold, and a slave worker from Germany. Next I'll most likely try Philosophy -> Republic slingshot, and then go whack Germany. :crazyeye:

Next I'll most likely try Philosophy -> Republic slingshot...

I'd be most impressed if you pulled off a Republic slingshot on deity considering Writing has been traded around! :) Hope someone finishes CoL before you finish Philo, I suppose...

Anyhow, good luck on the game and I'm definitely interested in seeing how it goes.

Well, duh... the starting location is such a huge pain that I might switch to a new game. The deserts and proximity of rivals hurts more than anything else. :wallbash:

It could be very doable if we started, for example, at the north end of the continent, but I really hate playing civ with bad starts. :)

Well do write up what you've done so far, provide a save maybe. And a link if into another thread/forum.

I think the save is still possible, its just difficult. And you can't afford the kind of aggression you've been advising.

Also, did you put a city where Thermopylae is in my game? its important to grab that resource for trading with germany. Extremely important. It means tech from germany and good relations/insurance against attack.

I don't want to depress you, but this level seems to be beyond your skills.
  • You run 30% lux tax, when in fact you need 0%.
  • You research at 50%, despite the fact that you have enough money for deficit research.
  • You don't know how to use/build a settler factory, as size 3 Athens will build a settler in 1, but grow only in 4 turns.
  • high food Sparta does not have a granary, which would allow it to pump out settlers and workers as needed; nor does it has any mines to get shields.
  • You have iron and none of your neighbors has it. Thus you should expand by force, not by low military.
I suggest to practice the basics on lower difficulty.

My lux is set where its needed to keep cities productive. I use F1 and change it often. I can't tell you what you see but I'm sure theres a reason. (like trying to generate enough money for embassy or for trade)

High food spartas generates alot more food then it does shield. A granary would mean population would grow even faster but the city would not be able to produce settlers much faster. I'd just quicker reach the point where I'd need to assign specialist to keep the city happy (thus slow down growth) Plus it would take a real long time to make the granary, time lost for getting out settlers to unclaimed areas before AI. Mining the hills is on the list for worker actions but will not be quick (and workers are needed elsewhere as well) Don't forget, still in despotism.

You don't know how to use/build a settler factory, as size 3 Athens will build a settler in 1, but grow only in 4 turns.
Maybe a worker finished a mine or grew another pop or otherwise the balance change. Maybe I timed a forest chop wrong. Regardless I know to not let production turns be wasted. So don't you sweat that.

I sense a real unpleasant condescending tone to your post tao and I don't appreciate it. Your so skilled and my playings such crap? Play those settings/that world yourself, document it and come out in a much better place then. Demonstrate by actions.

I don't think Tao was trying to insult you, TruePurple.

Anyhow, I was curious to see how induktio was faring with his attempt, but I think he ended the game. If you're ok with it, TruePurple, I'm thinking I'll give this game a whirl and see how I do, just for kicks. Can you post back here or PM me if that's cool with you?

(If you say yes)....I've been interested in posting a Deity game in the Stories and Tales thread and this might give a good opportunity for that. I'll plan on posting there and linking it back to this thread.

Planning on going for a Domination/Conquest. :mischief: I just finished a recent Deity Space game and I don't feel like another mega-game at the moment... Also, I'm going on vacation next week so there will be a pause in me playing.

Anyone who wants to feel free to try. I thought I already made that clear. But thanks for asking anyways.

Noone answered me, how feasible is it for 200k culture victory deity full AI, even for the most expert of players?

BTW I won't be playing for a bit, game went a bit wonka on me after a reinstall and stopped working. I think its my CD rom drive. So I uninstalled it (since at that point its just taking up hdd space and I'm real short of that at the moment)

So no chance to compare game unfortunately. But I'd be curious how you'd be doing up the the save point.

Thanks for the reply. I'll give this a shot then. :)

I'm going to try my best to forget the screenshots and info I've already seen. Certainly some things--the strategic and lux resources, the AI locations--I'll remember no matter how hard I try, but I want to do this as spoiler-free as possible. No real reason other than personal preference. In fact, TruePurple, if you don't mind, can you just let me know the game date where you stopped and I'll make sure to get a save for that time? That way I won't have to open your uploaded save...

On the 200k thing, I'm assuming you mean a 100k culture victory. I've never tried it on Deity, so I have no personal experience. That said, in my last Deity game I feel I could have easily gone 100k instead of space. I would have needed to whip a ton of culture, and there was one really strong AI civ that almost did drop 100k on me, but I think it was possible.

If you mean 20K, again no personal experience but I'm sure it's been done. In fact, I feel like I read a thread on someone who did a 20K OCC Sid game and won...

How many other nations in that deity game? What landmass? Map size? What nation and what traits for it? Kinda tough to switch culture victory half way inbetween. Takes soo long for it to accumulate.

You will have to upload the save to know or have someone else tell you. I uninstalled civ3 because it was no longer working and civassist won't load saves anymore either, I suppose with civ3 uninstalled.

If you want to look at the save without too much spoiler, try civassist set to a window that doesnt tell you too much but does tell you game date.

Otherwise I think it might have been around 1000BC but I don't know for sure. If you could have several saves and progress reports and stratagy behind decisions, that would be great. *thumbs up* Eventually maybe I'll have this fixed, try the game through. Then go to your thread and compare.

Off-topic: Since you asked...

My Deity Space game was a Standard-sized 60% Water Continents map. I played as Persia and pre-selected 7 other science civs as the opponents to keep the tech pace furious.

The way I would have gone 100K is through the sword. I killed the Byz, the Babylonians, and Greeks on my continent and owned the whole landmass around 1000AD. I had approx 175-200 cities, most ICS'd for science farms.

Anyhow, Sumeria on the other continent almost dropped 100k on me, which is the only way they could have stopped me. I ended up eliminating them in an absolute dogfight. They had around 93k culture before I did so, and if they hadn't mobilized they probably would have gotten 100k.

Anyhow, to get 100k in that game all I would have needed to do was rush culture like crazy in all my cities. I had the Internet, so I had 2cpt Research Labs in all the cities. It would have taken near to 2050AD to do it, but I think it was very possible. None of the other civs would have come close to winning...I'd have eliminated them if they did...

On topic, I'll definitely do a big write-up and save the game at many junctions. Certainly it would be interesting to compare. Perhaps you might want to give the save another whirl when you get your game working again?

I've started a thread in the Stories and Tales games where I'll play through this save. You can read about it here.
