I find that in alot of my games the AI want lots for their resources .E.g. Wines for say gems and 33gold/turn. Or Furs for Wines, Iron and 12gold/turn. Why is this? I think it has something to do with how rich you are, the more money you have coming in the more you have to pay for their resources.

They are unreasonable and greedy. They would rather trade amongst themselves, so if you want ot trade with them you better pay up. And yes, your welth does influence how much they demand for their resources and techs.

I don't know if your wealth has anything to do with it (it could, but I don't think so). I do believe that the utility you might get out of a resource definitely affects its cost.

For example, it is widely believed (and I've never seen anyhting in my games to contradict it) that the AI will value its luxury by how much happiness it will provide to your civ. Each luxury generates one happy face in each city, sometimes a lot more happy faces when the civ already has control of several luxuries and has constructed marketplaces in most of its cities. The AI's extra gem is worth a lot more to the civ that has 40 cities, with marketplaces in every city, and already has access to 4 luxuries, then it is worth to the civ that has 5 cities, no marketplaces and no luxuries. The AI will price its luxuries accordingly (try it when you're the smaller, backward civ -- you can get quite a deal from the AI).

I'm not certain how the strategic resources are valued.

Yes but of course, there are many factors involved.

But if you are 'stinkin rich' they will ask more of you because they know you can afford to pay more. Wouldn't you do the same. I often demand more for my lux and res to the more richer civs because they can pay more.

yeah dont bother trying to get resources or luxuries through trade, it will just make you want to tear your hair off your scalp. instead just GET the stuff for yourself permanently through conquest and aggressive expansion.

well they need to make a resource expensive because most of the time once you have that resource you are going to turn round and attck them with it

Catt is right. The AI values luxuries based on how much happy faces they will provide. If you play OCC or with just 2 or 3 cities the entire game, you can buy your first or second luxury for only 2 or 3 gpt. If all 8 luxuries are available, the last will cost you 10 to 15 gpt. With no local luxuries, i was importing all 8 for a total of less than 30 gpt. On the other hand, if you have extra luxuries, you can trade them for luxuries and gold. This has nothing to do with your wealth, for at the same time I was bringing in up to 500 gpt selling techs, and had over 25,000 in treasury.

One City Challenge. Play the whole game with one and only one city. You are not allow to build or capture cities, although youmay raze a few if you like. You may also not accept a cultural flip.

nop most of the time you are not
as you dont have to build settlers you have more time to build improvements wonders and units

But you probably have to restart the game on the 1st turn many times, because certainly the spot for the city must be perfect. It must have a river, lots of cows and shields on grasslands, and preferrably one coast tile.

@BGLG100
You only have to build units if there is a lot of open territory for barbarians to pop up in (lots of gold for ya there) or if one of the stupid AI's wants to declare war on you (like Montezuma did to me :mad: ). In a three city game I played, I had a total of 15 units at the end of the game - 12 workers and 3 warriors.

@Homie
I sometimes do restart the game several times, but the spot doesn't have to be perfect. Building next to a river on the coast definitely has advantages, though, and taking one or two steps to get there is more than worth it.

OCC on Deity?? I suppose it is possible, but I've never tried it. I had trouble getting one going on Monarch. Mostly I play at Regent level, and try to get space race victory. Cultural victory usually gets in the way though.
