Transferring oil to capital city

I have a big problem.

I've discovered oil on a island nearby so I build a city there. But how do I get the oil back to my "mainland"??

Please help me.

You've got to have the oil connected to a city by road/rail and a harbor in that city to establish a trade route back to the mainland.

Any other ways? I'm a newbie, but that seems like what I've been doing.

You could also build an airport in that city.
