Transporting units by air

I've spent a lot of time reading the manual and still wasn't able to find a single air unit that has a cargo room( is able to transport units via air to the different continent) just like naval transport unit does. Bombers and jet fighters are used to attack the enemy cities and units , and gunships are the hellicopters that only used for attack as well.

Let say I have a city with the airport on the different continent and I want to transport marines and tanks there for it's defense because it's being attacked by the enemy. How would I accomplish that?

Transporting units by air doesn't work like that. If you have a unit in a city with an airport a button will appear in the bar at the bottom of the screen marked "airlift" (picture of helicopter carrying something). Click this, and then click on the target city you want to send the unit to. You can only airlift from cities with airports, and I think you can only airlift one unit from a city each turn.

Oh well , that only works if you have a city with an airport and you can use airlift option. What if I want to attack the enemy city on the other continent, and I don't have any cities there , therefore I can't airlift my units there. And transporting them by the sea will take too long , before they will get there defending city will produce more defenders.

I remember in Civ3 there was an option to drop paratroopers( there was an icon with parachute on it) on any tile, not just a city with the airport. Is this gone in Civ4? And if so, how to get your units to the other continent by air if you don't have any cities there?

You don't.

With an airport, you can airlift one unit to any other of YOUR cities (not into another civ with whom you have open borders). The unit must have STARTED the turn in the city with the airport. Only ONE unit can be airlifted INTO a city per turn. An airport in the destination city is not required.

There is no other way, the units have to be transported by sea. So prepare for a long, slow voyage

Well if your playing the vanilla game you can only airlift from cities with airports.

I took and modded in a Cargo Plane... its a bomber with no attack and a transport capacity of 5. basicly you load it up and rebase it then unload it. Works very well especially because you can use it to send units to allies with Open Borders. One of the features i got alot of comments on. The only downside is its one of the units the AI doesn't know how to use... and atm i can't fix that :(

Some people don't like playing with units the AI doesn't use. Its all in preference. To me something like that SHOULD have been in the game to begin with as it creates alot of stratagies.

Thanks, Exavier, I will download your mod immediately. Strange though how they have ommitted so many units that would have made this game much more exciting.

hehe yea I added in a few things I loved from Civ3 that i could manage to get in atm. Though I can't change the models (my Typhoon class Nuclear Sub looks like a U-Boat) but hoping the SDK will let me... at the very least I have the models standing by. :P
