Just become aware of the new warlord exp, and browse through CivFanatics article about it. Quick question about the new Trebuchet unit, though. It is listed as 4:strength:, 1:move:, and 60:hammers:.

But this can't be right, can it? It is less powerful than Catapult, 5:strength:, which the Trebuchet is supposed to replace (since it is available with Engineering). How can you counter large stacks with only 4:strength:? Why would anyone want to upgrade their Cats to Trebuchet?

iirc, it gets strong city attack bonuses, like 100%. And I don't think cats upgrade to trebs, both serve a different purpose.

Trebuchet doesn't replace catapults. It's on an entirely different branch. Catapults still go right to cannons. Having used the trebs, they're awesome for taking cities.

What does it look like when it attacks? I would imagine the animation must look fantastic!

Civ3 bombard (attack with no risk to the unit) was a human only exploit. If you stacked up 20 to 30 of them and you could take down anything with almost no casualties. The AI never figured out how to do it. I don't suspect that the Civ4 AI would be any better.

On Civ 3 Conquests Catapults upgraded directly to trebuchets, its good they have changed this because this is unrealistic, in real life Catapults were used alongside trebuchets, mainly because of the lack of mobility of trebuchets and the time it took to set up trebuchets I would imagine.

Age of Empires 2 had the right idea and now so does Civilization.
