TSG 245 Opening Actions Thread

I'm on T287 now and its going well. I'm not as fast as others - I've conquered London and Beijing and am heading toward Austria now. Originally I thought I'd take out Austria first but decided to leave her there as an opponent for Napoleon - so he wouldn't get any ideas of attacking me. However, marathon speed seems really hard for the AI, they are all doing terrible. I think they're spending too much time building wonders, which seem like a bad investment on marathon. Domination is definitely much easier on marathon. I can actually trapse my army all over and not worry about it becoming obsolete.

After my initial string of bad luck with getting a unit from barb camps it seemed to get back to normal so I've gotten a good number of brutes and a couple archers. It still averages out to way less than 67% but its ok. But my goodness, 220g to upgrade an archer to a CB seems like an awful lot!

T112 I got GL and luckily was able to take Drama & Poetry, which was a 49-turn tech, nice!
T217 Captured London. I took out York first and stupidly razed it - not until later when I was trying to upgrade my brutes to swordsmen did I realize that York had a 6 iron tile, doh. I also forgot to make peace right after taking London and lost a scout that was too close to Nottingham.
T235 Captured Beijing.
T247 An unmet player has lost its capital! An unmet player controls the most original capitals - which can't be because there are only two Civs on the other continent and I'm actually the one who controls 3 original capitals. I guess I'm unknown to myself lol.

- What did you think about before starting the game, what was your approach to this game? -- Wasn't really sure what to expect since I don't ever remember playing marathon speed. I figured I'd play it like any other game - except try and take advantage of the German UA.
- Where did you settle and what did you build first? -- Settled in place built 2 scouts like normal then a shrine, a 3rd scout since its a large map, then monument.

- How did the terrain and map settings affect your early decisions? -- Terrain didn't really affect the early decisions, except when I found the faith NW I knew that would be my first expand. Map settings affected things greatly, I delayed my two expands longer than normal (I think, its hard to tell actually) and sent my units out barb camp hunting.

- What were your initial priorities? -- Taking barb camps!

- What tech path did you follow and why? -- Researched the techs in each column much more than I usually would because looking at the numbers of later tech, it just seemed like they would take forever.

- What Social Policies did you choose? -- Went full Tradition. Which I now see was a mistake, I should have opened Honor for the barb bonus.

- What Wonders did you try to get and did you get them? -- Only tried for GL early and got it (never usually try for it at all but it seemed like the AI were having a rough time so I risked it). I'm building Oracle now because there really wasn't much else I needed to build in Hamburg.

- Did you get a religion? What religious beliefs did you pick? -- Yep, Pantheon was food from Wheat. Then took Tithe, Pagodas, +1% production for each follower and Itinerant Preachers. The pantheon has been useful but I'm not sure I'll ever have enough faith to buy a Pagoda. The faith costs seem off on marathon, and I'm not sure how religious pressure works on this speed; I haven't converted any cities yet.

A fun game overall and I love the way it makes conquering seem more enjoyable. I don't even mind my troops taking forever to get somewhere because they'll still be useful when they get there!

I'm wondering why you took drama and Poetry over Philosophy? I thought NC and oracle would be much more valuable.
I saw Drama and Poetry was available and would have taken me 49 turns to research compared to the rest of the techs which were less than half that time to research so I went with the one that saved me the most time. Never crossed my mind to take Philosophy and build the NC with only one city. D&P seemed like such a great deal for saving me turns that I jumped at the opportunity. Would be interesting to see what difference the NC would have made that early. Although it probably would have taken me 100 turns to build at that point in the game.

I prefer to build NC with fewer cities as it is cheaper that way, and also it's less citites to build libraries in. I already had two cities at that time though.

You probably didn't have Calendar yet, so Drama was available and Philosophy wasn't. That happens to me frequently when I have enough production to attempt GL but have no calendar resources. Hooking up mining or quarry resources and unlocking roads or walls can be more important than getting Philosophy over D&P. (both are really good techs to get free, and D&P is on the way to Civil Service) Iron Working can be a good one to get free too; it costs the same as Philosophy and unlocks Colossus
