TSG 276 Opening Actions

Sure, I can only upgrade ships’ range, but not land units’. I must be missing a patch. Can anyone recall when the option became available?
Thanks
Srsly, you never used the range promotion?! It is one of the most awesome things. When I play domination I usually get it around Xbows, right after Logistics.

I just asked the AI and it said it's been in the game since the Gods & Kings expansion, which was 2012.

It's not hard to see that it is awesome. I just wasn't aware that it exists and so I guess I've never trained the troops in a studious enough way. Do you need every single one of these then?

I guess not, right, since one of them is naval.

But all the others then?

Edit: Just realized that Bombardment 2 is also naval.
Edit 2: The reason I have not come across Range as a land unit promotion is probably that I like Cover I (33% protection against ranged attacks) and Cover II (the same). Strangely enough, the Civilopedia lists them as melee promotions, even though they are available for ranged units too. This and the fact that the Civilopedia jumbles land and naval units together causes a slight lack of clarity.

This has been a typical promotion path for me:

Ok, I had to try it out and only one of the promotions is necessary. Thank you, you may now consider my posts as public monologues :)

I don't think any promotion in BNW has multiple prerequisites (although the required promotion can have a prerequisite itself, of course). For all promotions that list multiple prerequisites, any one of them should work.

Regardless for land ranged units and land seige units, taking the same terrain type promotion three times unlocks both the logistics and range promotions.

If you never got to level 3 in barrage or the other one then you won't see it. How about logistics, you probably didn't get that one either then? Logistics+Range promoted HAs are KILLER
You are correct - I've only reached logistics in the late game before, when it doesn't make a big difference. And it has mainly been with battleships and other naval units that seldom get destroyed. Knowing the game mechanics can help. I think this will change my approach to early military units.

For fast domination games I think straight to logistics and then range is the optimal strategy, the crossbows so promoted are game winners.
For slower games, later wars, I think cover 1 and 2 are excellent choices.
