I am clueless too. Maybe because of the war they start building units. Maybe I will give it another try and declare war and try to get GL...

Did you settle on the spices or just on the place the settler starts?

I jammed the GL by popping a hut for writing. can teching it and building it really be done?

and then i got beat by three turns!

its ok though, im on it again.... id say theres little point after all these reloads but im learning a fair bit about how luck and simple choices can vary the game path.

I'm not sure, but I don't think so. I tried many times. Tommynt mentions a war going on. Maybe by starting a war with other civs will trigger them to build units instead of building wonders. Then you not money to buy units to coop with eventual invations of troops... Maybe I will try this approach...

I've got a few questions to ask to tommynt and DaveMcW

First of all, tommynt, can you send me the link where you explain with details how you won on turn 266?

And to DaveMcW, how did you manage having plus happiness in the beggining since you settled 3 cities by turn 40? Did you pay 2-3 CS's to give you their luxuries? Also, I'm seeing that the main luxury you have is Ivory, so what was your tech path exactly? (since you didn't go for the stonehenge or the oracle at all)

In my experience, chances are slim that you will be to Trapping, in order to use that Ivory, before turn 45. So by having 3 cities on turn 41, you should have been at least for a few turns in the "negatives". So how did you do it?

Also, general question to everybody: How do you manage to keep your culture high if you get a start between let's say 2-3 aggressive civs? Do you stay at 1 city, and try to get 2-3 puppets? And you go to finish all of Tradition first?
