Since i couldnt get to any other civ2 forums that used to be well read by active players i decided to post this thread here, i hope people still read this forums though i ve been away for some time too :)))
So, there is something that is bothering me for some time now. It became when i changed my MP style from republic based-tech and civilization game to monarchy-ever war game style. I wouldnt discuss reasons for this change cos they are irrelevant for the problem that i encountered and want to discuss it. So, to continue, when playing monarchy war game it is crusial to build army of vet units of attack and defence style plus settlers or ships to ensure faster moves towards your enemy. I started with building barracs soon and war-game style proved to be really succesfull, till i started improvising and instead of barracs i waited for some time and build Tsun Zus Academy. As we know that means barracs in every city. There it became strange , cos i observed that my attacks, not as fast in the game as before (i had to wait for money or caravans to build the wonder) became more effective towards the same units as previously barracs build-units attacs!!!!! I thought at first someone has ben playing with the rules.txt file but i could see the same thing happened again in the game where i sent my barracs build units towards wonder build units (both vets). It stouned me cos barracs build units were no match for the wonder build units and i couldnt get through even with my barracs vets beeing far numericly superior. For instance, i couldnt kill wonder vet pike fortified in a plain with 2 barracs-vet elephants or knights, but my opponet killed my barracs vet pikes fortified in forrests with one knight almost unharmed. I ran some more games like this being me or the opponent the owner of the tsun zus and i encountered the same effect: VET units seemed stronger when build by academy.

I know there should be no difference in vet units cos they both get 50% bonus if the game is played by original rules, i am jusrt saying what i observed, maybe there is no reason this is true, maybe i just happen to have luck/unluck in those few games, maybe i just had big eyes for things they were not even there? But maybe there is something on it? I ve played only a few games observing this and it proved right in every of them. I am waiting for your comments, experiences, suggestions, etc

My friend, I will start by saying that I believe that your post would have been better placed in the 'Strategy & Tips' forum, but no matter to me. If a moderator sees this, you may elect to move the thread.

I generally build Sun Tzu (or STWA) in my games, since in the first Civ2 game I played years ago, I had a terrible time defeating the Mongols that did build it. Now, building STWA is standard procedure and I do not build barracks until the development of mobile warfare. :tank:

So, getting to your question, I do not believe that having STWA adds any particular attack or defense bonus to your units vs. barracks-built units above and beyond the fact that all new units produced after STWA is completed are veterans. You also mention the terrain bonuses for defense, so I do not understand the problem that you had. :o Are fortifications part of the difference?

The only other thought that I have it that if you have also built Leonardo's Workshop (LW), then your units lose their veteran status when they are upgraded to better units. In your case, the fortified pikeman in the forest may have been upgraded from a phalanx and lost his veteran status (until he wins another battle, per STWA). ;)

Perhaps if starlifter sees this post, he will have a suggestion or two.
