Tweeking Civ IV

Does anyone have a link or know some good tweeks to make this game fly in the late stages? My game works great untill the middle ages then slows down to unplayable lag. I reboot will fix this for another 100 turns then it just lags out again. Does anyone know of a fix or tweek for this issue?

1. win (or lose) before you enter the late stages
2. play smaller maps
3. close all other applications when launching civ (instant messengers, antivirus..)
4. edit ini file to disable audio (enableaudio=0), turn off movies; there's the memsaver option,...
5. decrease in game graphics options (resolution, details), turn off animations, ...
6. ensure good ventilation to the computer, open up the computer case to let in some fresh air
7. buy more memory
8. pray

Be sure you're patched to the latest version of Civ4.
Be sure your computer's chipset, audio, and video drivers are crisp and new.
Clear your hidden cache folder often.
Consider a program such as FreeRAM XP Pro.
Eat snacks in moderation.
