Civ IV sound issue

Hey, everyone. I'm back at it again with an issue I'm having with Civ IV. So the audio is completely muffled whenever I play the game, and it doesn't change no matter with configuration I have it on. It's already bad enough that I listen to scuffed audio, but even worse is that I can't hear my friends at all when I'm on a Discord VC. Is there anyway I can fix this?
