Whenever I capture the Zulu city of Ulundi, I always rename it Ulundipants.

I think I need therapy…:crazyeye:

Someone here mention turning 'Hannover' to 'Hangover', related to their civilization being called the Drunks. Hahaha...

My early city's names lacked maturity. Most of them where derived from their original name (e.g. Hamburger) while others sought to fit the most ridiculous name within limits (e.g. SexOnThePiano).

I really like the idea of fitting the most ridiculous name possible - this could open up a whole new world of possibilities!

Most west. East to the sea. Midinland. North left.
I've done that.
Rams, Steelers, Dolphins, Eagles... names like that. Civ? NFL. People: football players.

I started to move in that direction; S Africa 1 through 5 are common. Prior, on EARTH, I was doing real locations but then I'd get all obsessive compulsive when cities were a few tiles off from the intended naming point. Though I mostly play on EARTH, I'd do the same for others, e.g. if a landmass looks like Japan I call it Japan.

Strange, I have never renamed cities even when I was little child. However, the fact that I didn't know english back then might have something to do with it :)

I once played an Earth game in which I attempted to rename every single city so it matched its real world location, AND building all the wonders in their exact location, sometimes spending 30 minutes researching 1 city name. Then I realized the Aztecs had built the Colossus in the 3000's BC, and I had to restart...

Hey mates,

i can understand you a little, but some of those names are realy arkward. What would you think, if you were a towncitizen?

I only change names when they are wrong ( like German "nuremberg" or "heidelburg" - i am from germany- i hope you understand ;) ), but i havent changed names from cities i conquered- how is this possible ? What do i have to do?

Taz

Agreed; I went in and corrected Heidelberg's name. This makes my Heidelberg SUPER REALISTIC! :crazyeye:

Heidelburg should be Heidelberg (note the e)
Nuremberg should be Nűrnberg
Cologne really sticks in the German craw because that's a franco-fied spelling. It's Kőln.

Ah yes. Re-reading Taz-devil's post I can see the difference. I can imagine that would be pretty annoying.

yeah it feels quite strange :)

i would like to know, how many not-germans know the city heidelburg. i know what they like to play :D

Nice Hidelberg Tristan !! I wonder which house the guy is living in ;)

how can i change names of cities when i captured them?

taz

As a non-German who studied a little German in high school, I had the impression that a "Burg" was a city and a "Berg" was a mountain. I suspect that it is this naive impression that led to the misspelling of Heidelberg. Apparently, this is not quite correct.
Civ got Hamburg and Brandenburg correct (no surprise here to the non-German). Civ did get Königsberg right, though (minus the umlaut of course).
This still leaves me a little confused over how to tell whether any given city is a Berg or a Burg?

Use the Rename button on the city screen.

Well depends which version of Civilization I you got.
If you got version: 474.01 you cannot renamed taken cities, but for example 474.04 you can :) but then it is also a lot harder because your cities will be more "eager" to be dissapointed, you cannot stay all the time in despotism as you can in 474.01 and just build chariots and settlers and you will eventely win sooner or later :)

The first time I played civ I attacked the Germans, captured Cologne, opened diplomatic contact, ended the war and gave them Koln.
Since then I have changed the default names list, and Heidelburg is now Idlebug, which makes its citizens seem quite lazy.
