You think the AI would be able to understand loans. I can't imagine the program would be so hard to write...

The AI values GPT a lot higher than straight gold. I think they value it at 45 gold or something similar. It's why you can buy open borders with 1GPT but not 30 gold.

Why did they change this in BNW? I'm pretty sure in G&K they would trade 1 GPT for 22 gold.

I've had the AI give me lump sum gold in exchange for GPT that is of lower value. It's ridiculous.

Yea, it's silly for the AI to value GPT over lump sums. In almost every situation, lump sums are better. My best guess is that in BNW you can only trade lump sums via friendship. So this way, friendships are quite useful despite the innate counter-intuitiveness of the AI prioritizing GPT.

I've read earlier on this forum that the AI doesn't understand interest, sure about that?

She just doesn't trust herself to keep that much cash around at once. She may spend it all on one place. Using you as her money guardian. :)

Wut really?

I only ever use this for science games. By Industrial era - rush buy Public Schools/Research Labs/Factories. Trade about 90gpt for 2700g.

In the real world, lump sum gold is more valuable. In BNW, gold per turn is more valuable because it can actually be traded with people you don't have a DoF with (i.e. it's more liquid), and unlike the real world, there is no option to default short of a declaration of war.

There are situational exceptions, sure. I'll take out a loan to buy a cargo ship any day of the week. But in general, in BNW I can do more with gold per turn.

(Also, I agree with the OP : the idea of a loan seems to be very confusing to the AI)

That's a good attempt to rationalise the AI's weird preference, but it doesn't work where the AI is having a healthy stream of GPT and doesn't need that extra GPT to trade.
