Sim_One: also, when i learned Spanish I was told NEVER to say por favor if I didn't want to give away the fact that I was a foreigner......

Yep, Brasil speaks a Portuguese dialect, and there is also Spain.... but still, most spanish speakers live in middle and southern america.

Well it's still pretty surprising to me. Places like Spain, Argentina and Venezuela had always been very polite and welcoming places in my impressions. But I guess I'll take a different perspective now. And Killer, the tip about por favor is certainly helpful since I'm also a Spanish student! :goodjob: But still, wouldn't my strong English accent just give away my foreigner status?

Sim_One: I do not think they are rude - it is just they are helpful and polite WITHOUT saying 'please'. But if you take their politicians, all those dictators of southern America.......

as for the accent: I have heard so many different accents of Spanish - oh well....
