Unable to allocate draw buffer?

I AM SO FREAKING MAD I HAVE TO RETYPE THIS.

But anyways, when I open Civilization III: Conquests, there's no text whatsoever. No "new game", "quit", etc. So I press enter. It takes me to a text-less area of configuring a new game. I keep pressing enter. It takes me to where you start playing and... BOOM. "FATAL ERROR! Unable to allocate draw-buffer. Terminating program". So it terminated. I am running Windows XP with DirectX 9.1a. I tried installing 8.0, but it said it wasn't compatiable. Please help, cause I really want to play Civilization III! Oh, and did I mention, it worked before.

you probably have directx 9.0a (the latest directx is 9.0c http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx?url=/windows/directx/downloads/ , and the game requires 9.0b... try re-installing
