Unit Idea - Special Forces

So, the unit that I don't recall ever seeing in Civ is a 'Special Forces' unit like Navy Seals, Army Rangers, etc. Yes, there have been spies, but these would be different and I would see these units as being very expensive to build and require a few different city buildings and/or civ advances. Their use could be for things like taking out a fully fortified SAM site in a mountain range, or taking out enemy units like tanks, etc. They could also be used to get behind enemy lines without the enemy knowing it and help pave the way for a preemptive strike. What do you think?

i kinda agree with mastertyguy..but i think a few more...i stress few..would be pretty cool. ie,saboutors or demolition, snipers(not sure how it would work..but hey) mine layers and mine sweepers..maybe not but a few bonus units and abilities would be alright

maybe snipers could weaken ...like bombard..but more persise ...lowering city moral...weakening units..kill city govenors halting production for a turn or two...i dunno...sounded neat

Snipers would have to act as an overlay in many ways. They are used more disruption and such than actual damage. So the best way to simulate them is to allow them to move into hexxes with enemy units in them for a time. As time progresses they would have a chance to "disrupt" the command of the unit thus rendering it useless for a turn and lowering its defensive capabilities.

that ideas cool as hell too texan...i dont think that there should be to many special units..but as we pointed out..a couple could be usefull

if they have regicide games it would also be neat if a very advanced sniper unit could and to quote saving private ryan "within in a mile of adolf hittler with a clear line of sight..pack your bags boys wars over"...which in turn could lead to sniper on sniper combat in defense of the king...or like espionage..."sir, our guard units captured a sniper trying to exterminate you"

Very good idea!!! :goodjob: :goodjob:

Although many people point out we already have that kind of units, no one come close as Kainai said.

This kind of units cruelly miss to civ4.

Maybe some would argue bring civ4 to rather a tactical level (which would go against the strategy philosophy), which is not entirely false. On the other hand, non-military features of civ needs to be developped more than military ones :hmm: .

Snipers would be cool, I like snipers, but I don't see what they could bring to civ.

Some ideas : an adjunct unit : a unit you can join/unjoin to another unit to make it stronger. Advantages : extra-offensive power, extra-energy, extra-def, etc.

a def unit type with defensive bombard value (such as archer and guerilla in C3C) : would replace guerilla unit, freeing guerilla to another.

a trap unit : could be the successor of a new type of "trap unit" which .. make a trap  in which enemy units lose hp if they step in.

Or, as in that movie I forget the name (a Russian sniper fights a German sniper in Stalingrad, what was it?), it increases moral, and can kill great leaders, reduce experience of other units (killing the leaders and the best soldiers), cause unhappiness in cities (fear), etc. I like snipers, it would be so cool!

it would be enemy at the gates. and the whole sniper thing has got me all giddy....i really cant believe that it hasnt been included..there are sooooooo many applications to that unit...any of them could be used to make a useful unit

sabouters. plantings bombs and s*&t like the old spy units to destroy improvemnets halt production destroy planes and ships at dock or in hangers...destroy radar towers with engaging defending unit..i dunno

Another special unit? While I can think of several (Rangers, Delta Force, and the like) I can think of none which would be a reasonable addition to the game, either for balance or implementation issues.

Regarding the Sniper, there are some really good ideas here! Perhaps a blending of all of them would produce the best option. oh, and I really liked "Enemy at the Gates" as well.

snipers the only one id really like to see...i was just throwing out a couple ideas just to get a take on it

Id like to see a jeep unit for scouting behind enemy lines. A remote control Spy plane to locate troops where abouts and resources. Trench Units, Newbelwerfers, a Military Band, Flagboys, and Mobile Hospitals. Snipers Can come with the Jeep, but how many units can a sniper take on?

my idea for a sniper is more of a demoralizing unit...kinda like bombard injuring units ..or stacked with other units gives a first strike jab...i like the option as well to lower cities happiness..and possibly assasination of local leaders halting production or something(can be countered by having sniper units of your own)

snipers are cool and all but they really don't appear in that big of a way to come in for civ...

Now spec-ops teams are different, you heve USAR, SEALS GSG-9, SAS, Royal marines, Delta Force, Forigen Legion, all those different teams.

Those teams play a MAJOR factor in modern warfare, especialy now, that guerilla warfare is hitting a new high.

One way that they could be used, is to defuse riots and other incidents AT home. Remember the terrorists and the plane, or the takeover of that school in Holland by terrorists? GSG-( and the Royal Marines.

They could be used as a more effective riot control unit, and then implement other things for actual combat.

i could see that i like the riot control..but enough units will sometimes already do that...and i feel snipers to make a big apperence in history....maybe assasin would be better in early times..but snipers are present in alot of wars not just modernamerican minute men armed with kentucky long riffles, though primative were responsible for taking alot of officers out before the battle started..and in more modern wars and conflicts snipers were huge...albeit not numerous they repersented a huge fear that lowered moral of soldiers in the eurpean theatre of world war two..and really recent the yugoslavia conflict..snipers would routinly shoot people to clear streets and spread enormace amounts of fear. i feel snipers are just as in important to warfare and politics(civil and foriegn) as any other special force
