Unit question.

the sipahi's 8 attack stays the highest for a loong time

I think, the Immortals are. Early in the game they rule, and that one attack point more is 33% more attack strength. And they remain strongest until cavalry comes!(Except for crusaders)

On archipelago maps, dromons can make the difference!

Love the Mayan's javelin thrower - the enslave option tickles me, and makes those barbarian uprisings all the more fun.

Ottoman's Siphai in an Army are the best thing in the world at that time- 8 attack base, 4 move, blitz ability... if the Ottomans manage to do a little leader fishing when they have Knights and set up a few armies for Siphai, they can do serious conquering until Infantry show up, which means the Ottomans are running rampant at a time everyone else is stuck in defensive mode.

The Russian Cossack in Conquests is also good- an attack of 5, but you have the Blitz ability, so all three moves can be attacks. If Russia can get up the MT track before the rest of the world gets too far up Gunpowder, then the Russians can do some nice conquering... but if they're behind in tech, Blitzing doesn't help a unit that has a lower attack than most units have a defense.

Immortals are lethal. Give the Persians a good start and early access to iron and they will soon dominate their continent. Usually I play Babylon and thus starting close to Ottoman and Persia. Very often the Immortals have sliced up the Ottoman so once we get up to Sipahi/Cavalry-time, the Ottoman are nothing but a fragment. At best. Their Sipahis matter not then.

The best defenders at the time of Immortals are Num. Merc and Hoplites and they are really no challenge...

I do believe the cossack has a 6 attack like every other cavalry..

I really like the Celts' Gallic Swordsmen. Very mobile, 2 attack and defense, just takes iron and 10 more shields than Swordsmen. To me the early fights are the critcal ones for building my empire. Gallic Swordsmen are great for waging early wars or just ensuring that you can out expand your neighbors.
:king:

Yes, the Cossack still has a 6 attack. It's defense was decreased from 4 to 3 but it was given the blitz ability for the expansion. I believe it has a 5 attack in the Napoleon conquest, but that is it.

I was going to post a new thread with this question, but I think it has been answered in this one. Just to confirm: blitz is the ability to use each move for an attack?

I'm getting mad by the bit!!!
Panzer or Celtic Swordsman! there are other also!

I like the Immortals for offence in the Ancient Age. With an attack of four, you can dominate other civs close by and expand your holdings very early in the game. On defence I like the Hoplite and the Swiss Mercenary. These units are cheap and have great stats for the time period.

[off]Cossack was pretty much of a UU in CIV:PTW, since you didn't have to carry musketmen along to all the new-conquered cities.

Now I do not see any use of blitz for cossacks - only in scaring away a backward enemy's longbowmen and other early-Medieval rubbish.

E.g. after you attack a city or a town with fortified musketmen -there's not much left of your cossacks after this attack to blitz, speaking nothing about fortified riflemen. [/off]
