Unit Stacking

When I build a settle I would like to send a military unit with them. However when I select the "all" units icon, every unit in the city moves with the settler including fortified or sleeping units. How can I select one or two military units to escort my settler and have the remaining units stay in the city?

What are the advantages of stacking units?

How can I tell if units are stacked and which units are in the stack?

With the Settler selected and ready to move you can hold down the shift key and select one or more other unit pictures. They will have a white selection box around them just like the settler's small picture.

Then move away.
