I'm trying to figure something out. When I look at a unit in a city that can be upgraded, I see the cost displayed. If I hold down the <ALT> key to upgrade all units, the cost does not seem to add up - it is not an even multiple of the single-unit cost - works out to be higher than the single unit cost times the number of that unit I see in the military advisor.

Anybody know what is going on with that?

I do...what is shown is the cost of upgrading ALL ELIGIBLE UNITS to that particular unit. Often there will be more than one type of unit eligible to upgrade to (for instance) a rifleman. The cost to upgrade some other unit is different than the one you're looking at, which makes the cost not equal to a multiple of the current unit's upgrade cost.

I hope my explanation wasn't too confusing.

That does make sense - not too confusing. I wondered if it was something like that, but I didn't take the time to hunt for all of the units that could be upgraded to Mech Infantry. They must have changed the direction this upgrade option works. I thought that in Civ III you selected a unit and all of the same units were upgraded. It seems then that here in Civ IV you select a unit and upgrade EVERYTHING that can be upgraded to that unit. I think I like the Civ III way better.

Thanks for your insight.
